4 Options for Biking with Your Kids

By Adam Marsal

What better way to get some exercise and have fun with your kids than taking them out for a ride? But what’s the best way to share the experience with them?

If you only have one child, a kid’s seat on the back of your bike may be the way to go. On the other hand, if you want top bring the whole brood along, you might want to consider a box bike or a trailer. Finally, for older kids who like to contribute to the effort, there are tagalongs. So let’s have a look at the pros and cons of each option.

Trailers

PROS

  • Trailers are more comfortable than kids’ seats
  • You can carry more than one child at a time
  • Your child or children can sleep while you ride
  • Your kids will stay warm and dry even in bad weather
  • There’s lots of storage space for toys, food, drinks or extra gear

CONS

  • It’s difficult to communicate with your kids with them behind you
  • Trailers won’t allow you to fit through tight spaces
  • No tight turns with a trailer attached
  • Your own bike needs to be robust, in good working order and have excellent brakes

 Seats

PROS

  • Seats are less expensive than trailers
  • They take up less storage space and are easier to deal with
  • You can still fit through the same tight spaces you’re used to
  • You’re closer to your child

CONS

  • Carrying your child in a kid’s seat raises your center of gravity and effects your bike handling
  • You can only carry one child
  • Your child isn’t protected from the elements
  • If you fall, your kid falls with you

Box bikes

PROS

  • Like with a trailer, you can carry several children at once
  • You’re able to see and interact with your kids
  • Riding in the front is fun for the kids, who get a nice view of the road
  • Box bikes are surprisingly agile

CONS

  • Box bikes are heavy
  • As with a trailer, you won’t be fitting through any tight spaces

Tagalongs

PROS

  • Tagalongs let your kid pedal along with you, letting him or her be part of the action
  • Tagalongs have minimal impact on handling and speed
  • As with a kid’s seat, you’ll be able to fit through tight spaces
  • Tagalongs are easy to attach and detach

CONS

  • They’re not suitable for smaller children
  • You can only ride with one child at a time
  • As with a trailer, it’s difficult to communicate with your child with him or her behind you

You’ll need to decide for yourself with option works best for you according to your needs and requirements, but whichever one you choose, a day out riding with your kids is always a day well spent.
