Researchers from Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom conducted one of the most comprehensive evaluations of collagen to date. By analysing data from 16 systematic reviews and 113 randomised controlled trials involving nearly 8,000 participants worldwide, the team mapped out exactly where collagen works and where it’s just hype.
The verdict on recovery and performance
The key finding is not great for any cyclist who has been taking collagen supplements with hopes of getting faster. Despite clever marketing, the study found virtually no evidence that collagen boosts athletic performance or speeds up acute recovery.
No reduction in post-workout soreness: Studies tracking participants at the 24-hour and 48-hour post-exercise marks showed that collagen had no statistically significant effect on reducing muscle soreness.
No faster strength recovery: Taking collagen did not speed up how quickly athletes recovered their strength or muscular power output following exercise.
No short-term tendon boost: While long-term collagen use modestly supports tendon structure over time, it produced no meaningful short-term changes in tendon mechanical properties or stiffness after workout sessions.
As the study authors pointed out, collagen’s impact is not “acutely ergogenic”, meaning it won’t give you an immediate boost of energy or improvements in getting rid of fatigue overnight.
Where collagen actually delivers
While it fails as an instant recovery supplement, the study confirmed that collagen isn’t just snake oil. It offers legitimate, long-term benefits for structural connective tissue and joint health, particularly as athletes age.
The analysis revealed that consistent collagen use yields real improvements in:
Joint comfort: Participants suffering from osteoarthritis experienced significant reductions in joint pain, stiffness, and overall discomfort.
Connective tissue support: The research showed modest, gradual gains in muscle architecture, fat-free mass, and tendon structure over extended periods.
Skin & dermal health: Long-term use predictably enhanced skin hydration and elasticity.
Professor Lee Smith, a co-author of the study and Professor of Public Health at ARU, put the findings into perspective:
“Collagen is not a cure-all, but it does have credible benefits when used consistently over time, particularly for skin and osteoarthritis. Our findings show clear benefits in key areas of healthy ageing, while also dispelling some of the myths surrounding its use.”
What this means for your training
For the average rider, context is everything. Collagen isn’t an alternative to your standard post-ride protein recovery mix, nor will it rebuild broken-down muscle fibres after an all-out effort. Traditional complete proteins (like whey, soy or pea protein) remain superior for muscle protein synthesis because collagen lacks a balanced amino acid profile to trigger muscle repair.
However, if you are an older cyclist dealing with nagging knee discomfort or a rider trying to safeguard your tendons against chronic overuse injuries, daily collagen supplementation might still deserve a spot in your routine. Just change your timeline expectations: benefits accumulate over months of daily use rather than hours.
Professor Smith highlighted the need for athletes to view the supplement with realistic expectations:
“This study marks an important step towards more informed public guidance and better designed future research. We need more high-quality clinical trials, including research examining long-term health outcomes, optimal dosing and differences between collagen sources.”
So, keep eating your carbs and complete proteins for post-ride recovery. Collagen won’t make you faster tomorrow, but taking it daily might keep your joints crank-ready for years to come.
