The victory also shuffled the overall standings: Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike) slipped back into the red jersey after his team finished second on the day, just eight seconds slower than UAE. Lidl-Trek, who looked on course for a famous win, ultimately settled for third at nine seconds behind.
Almeida: “A perfect job”
João Almeida, now sitting equal on time with teammate Juan Ayuso in second overall, praised the squad’s execution:
“We knew we would be fighting for the win, but there’s a lot of good teams here and we need to be realistic. I think we did a really perfect job and we deserve it as well.”
Almeida emphasised that while the gaps are minimal, the performance boosts confidence heading deeper into the race. “Of course, the gaps are small. It doesn’t really mean anything, but it’s a good start.”

Vingegaard retakes red
For Vingegaard, the runner-up finish was enough to reclaim the leader’s jersey, holding an eight-second advantage over Ayuso and Almeida. David Gaudu, who started the day in red, endured a tough ride as Groupama-FDJ finished 24 seconds down, dropping the Frenchman to sixth overall, 16 seconds adrift.
Drama on the road
The stage wasn’t short on incident. Groupama-FDJ had to dodge two stationary police motorbikes in the finale, while Israel–Premier Tech’s effort was disrupted by a protest that forced several riders to brake. Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe saw their challenge dented by a crash involving Matteo Sobrero, while Lidl-Trek lost key men Carlos Verona and Julien Bernard before the line, costing them crucial seconds.
