Almeida Heroically Defends the Giro Lead and Other Cool News from the World of Cycling

By Monica Buck

Another Monday is here and our news from the world of cycling with it. So, what did you miss?

The Portuguese still in pink

When João Almeida (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) donned the pink jersey on Mount Etna, no-one really expected him to last 12 stages in the lead. But he’s done it. The 22-year-old is riding his first-ever Grand Tour, which makes his performance all the more impressive. Almeida needs to be considered a serious GC contender now but stage 15 showed that it won’t be easy for him. Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb) left him behind with 5 km to the summit of Piancavallo and gained 30 seconds on Almeida. It took a lot of effort for the Portuguese to minimise the losses. The question now stands: can he make it till the end with just a 15-second lead? What do you think? The last week should provide a very good show.
