Coolest Race Ever? Meet Glacier Bike Downhill

By Martin Mrazek

The town of Saas-Fee in Switzerland annually hosts one of the most adrenaline-pumped bike races in the world. Every year, hundreds of cyclists throw themselves down the Mittelallalin Mountain starting at the altitude of 3,500 meters.

Taking on the 1,700-meter height difference to the finish line, these daredevils regularly reach the speed of 120 kph. But the steep hill isn’t the only obstacle. The track is, of course, covered in snow and ice, making the race a hefty challenge even for the most skilled MTB riders.

Still, it looks like great fun, right? If you want to try it out, make sure to reserve your spot on the starting block soon, as the number of participants is limited. You’ll probably head out as one of the last riders, because the best ones from the previous year’s race start first, but that doesn’t really matter. It’s the best possible way to spend 90 CHF anyhow.
