L’Étape du Tour 2025: Conquer the Alps Like a Pro!

By Monica Buck

On Sunday, 20th July 2025, cycling enthusiasts from around the world will have the chance to tackle one of the Tour de France’s iconic stages as part of L’Étape du Tour de France. This unique race provides amateur cyclists the thrilling opportunity to ride the same challenging course that professional riders will face just days later on Stage 19 of the Tour de France: 131 km from Albertville to La Plagne, featuring five renowned climbs and a staggering 4,500 meters of elevation.

A taste of the Tour

L’Étape du Tour de France offers a rare experience to amateur riders, allowing them to become part of the Tour’s legendary legacy. Launched in 1993, this annual cyclosportive has grown to become Europe’s premier cycling event for amateurs, welcoming over 15,000 participants each year. The route follows the exact path that the pros will tackle: starting in Albertville and climbing the Côte d’Héry-sur-Ugine, the Col des Saisies, the Col du Pré, the Cormet de Roselend, and finally finishing with the gruelling 19.1 km ascent to La Plagne.

According to Christian Prudhomme, the Tour’s race director, this stage’s intense mountain profile, coupled with its relatively short length, amplifies the challenge. “Thanks to the spicy nature of what’s gone before, the final 19.1-kilometre ascent to La Plagne will seem all the more interminable,” says Prudhomme. Former pro cyclist and We Love Cycling expert Zdeněk Štybar adds that this stage could play a pivotal role in determining the overall Tour champion, noting that even a leader’s slight misstep could jeopardise their entire race.

A cycling and scenic challenge

While the physical demands of the course are immense, L’Étape du Tour de France is also celebrated for its breathtaking scenery. Riders can soak up views of Alpine valleys and picturesque mountain passes, experiencing firsthand the beauty of the regions that host this unique event. Closed roads and the support of local authorities make for a pro-level experience, ensuring safety and an immersive Tour de France-like atmosphere.
