Isabelle Plumereau had long dreamt of creating a hearse that reflected her commitment to sustainability and community. She envisioned a vehicle that would allow families and friends to accompany their loved ones to their final resting place in a serene and respectful manner.
“I had dreamed of realizing this idea for several years. We needed a bicycle that was sufficiently large and powerful to carry this precious load and a partner who could design it combining robustness, lightness, stability, and a comforting aesthetic. I was captivated by the Carapate Adventure caravans, designed by Fabien Denis and Jean-Marie Reymond. They were immediately excited by this challenge!”
The result of this collaboration was La Corbicyclette, a beautiful fusion of a hearse and a bicycle. Built on the sturdy platform of an electrically assisted steel cargo tricycle, the hearse featured a waterproof compartment made of marine-grade plywood. This material was chosen for its durability, lightness, and environmental friendliness, ensuring that La Corbicyclette remained true to its eco-conscious roots.
La Corbicyclette was more than just a mode of transportation; it represented a new way to honor the departed. In a quiet and respectful procession, family and friends could follow the bicycle hearse on foot or by bicycle. This gentle journey allowed mourners to take their time, providing a sense of calm and reflection during a difficult time.
On November 2, 2022, La Corbicyclette received official approval from the Prefecture of Police in Paris, marking a significant milestone for the project. However, the triumph was short-lived. On December 30, 2022, the authorization was unexpectedly revoked due to a differing interpretation of the legal texts governing such vehicles. La Corbicyclette, once ready to grace the streets of Paris, was forced to remain in the garage.
Despite this setback, the concept of La Corbicyclette captured the public’s imagination and received widespread media attention. The innovative idea of an eco-friendly and community-focused hearse resonated with many, highlighting the potential for new traditions in honoring the deceased. Encouraged by this positive reception, Isabelle Plumereau and her team remained committed to advocating for the approval of La Corbicyclette.
As the appeal process unfolds, the dream of seeing La Corbicyclette on the streets of Paris remains alive. This unique bicycle hearse stands as a testament to the power of innovative thinking and the enduring quest to find beauty and respect in all journeys, even the final ones.
