The unfortunate collision during a descent on the final day happened at a blistering speed of 70 km/h. While Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) got back on his bike and continued, Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) was forced to abandon. To add to the sustained injuries, the pros quickly found out that some of the fans were not very Christian-like.

Dan Martin dropped 18 places in the GC due to the crash and finished 23rd overall. He should race the Tour of the Basque Country. Bardet suffered chest contusions and is expected to undergo a CT scan to assess the whole extent of his injuries.
Looks like someone didn’t left empty handed of our misfortunes. Same story for my power meter who was on my broken bike 👎 https://t.co/M6e3y8QJIg

Both of the pros had their kit stolen but that probably wasn’t the worst thing that happened to cycling during this year’s Volta a Catalunya. A disgraceful video showing one of the spectators filming himself laughing at an injured rider appeared after stage one. We, (hopefully) understandably, won’t give him any space on our site.
