Niewiadoma’s lead over the main pack was substantial, allowing her to assume the position of the virtual GC leader momentarily. However, the 28-year-old fell short in the two-rider dash to the finish line, losing out to Niamh Fisher-Black from Team SD Worx. She also missed the overall podium by a narrow seven seconds.
“Knowing I had Marlen [Reusser] and Demi [Vollering] trailing behind me, both powerhouses, I was aware that I’d need some luck. I had hoped for a mechanical issue or perhaps for their legs to give out in the sweltering heat. But naturally, you never wish such misfortune on your rivals,” Niewiadoma candidly expressed, in regards to her shot at usurping the yellow jersey from Reusser.
Despite her hopes, Reusser herself was compelled to intervene when Vollering’s efforts proved insufficient to close the gap. Even though the result was not in her favour, Niewiadoma made a significant impact on the race, compelling other riders to respond.
“I truly relished the competition here. After the Individual Time Trial (ITT), I felt letdown, aware that despite having a strong form, it just wasn’t my day. However, I’m pleased to have rebounded and made a significant contribution to the race. I consistently felt great, and was eagerly awaiting the right moment to strike. I’m also grateful for Tiffany [Cromwell] who did a fantastic job setting me up for the climb. Her contribution is a testament to excellent teamwork,” she lauded her teammate from the early breakaway.
Kasia’s last personal triumph dates back over four years ago to June 13, 2019, when she clinched stage 4 of The Women’s Tour. Since then, Niewiadoma has achieved 12 runner-up and 10 third-place finishes, often missing the top spot by narrow margins. Acknowledging her disappointment at not securing a win in the 2022 season, she adjusted her winter training regimen in preparation for 2023.
Her performance in the spring season was notably consistent, with a sixth place in Strade Bianche, fifth in the Tour of Flanders, and fourth in the Amstel Gold Race, culminating in a podium finish at the Itzulia Women GC. However, the top spot still eludes her.
Will her consistent performance help her in the fast approaching Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, though? We cannot wait to find out.
