Ineos Grenadiers on Bernal’s Latest Injury: ‘We’re optimistic about him being back racing in the next couple of weeks’

The Colombian has been forced to abandon the Vuelta a San Juan due to a knee injury, which also saw him withdraw from Ruta del Sol. Looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to watch Bernal clash with Tadej Pogačar. Since it won’t happen at Ruta del Sol today, cycling fans will most likely have to wait till Paris-Nice next month.

An Ineos Grenadiers spokesperson told Cyclingnews: “Egan’s left knee is still not 100% race ready following his crash in San Juan, and much as he’d like to race there is no point risking its recovery.

“We’re optimistic about him being back racing in the next couple of weeks.”

Bernal has been in fine attacking form in Argentina before the crash happened, adding more expectations to the two stars finally racing against each other again. If it happens at Paris-Nice, then Pogačar and Bernal will be in fine company. The defending Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla) and Romain Bardet (DSM) are all going to be there as well. We can’t wait!

The Colombian’s superstar career has been marred by injuries in the last couple of years. After lengthy problems with his back, he crashed into a bus in January of last year. He suffered 20 broken bones and required seven separate surgeries. He returned to racing last year at a few smaller races. His goal for this season is to return in a winning fashion to the Tour de France.
