1. The Great Western Greenway, Co. Mayo

One of Ireland’s most picturesque cycling routes, the Great Western Greenway is a traffic-free path stretching 42 km from Westport to Achill. With breathtaking coastal views, charming villages, and plenty of stop-off points, this is the perfect choice for a relaxed, social ride in the West of Ireland with your cycling crew. Be sure to end your journey with a hearty brunch at one of Achill’s seaside cafés or treat yourselves to a post-ride spa session in Westport.

2. The Waterford Greenway, Co. Waterford

Another fantastic off-road option, the Waterford Greenway offers 46 km of cycling through lush countryside, medieval ruins, with the stunning Comeragh Mountains in the background. Start in Waterford city and make your way to Dungarvan, stopping at quirky cafés and artisanal bakeries along the way. Once you reach Dungarvan, be sure to reward yourselves with a seafood lunch at one of its many waterfront restaurants.

3. Howth Peninsula Loop, Co. Dublin

For those based in or near the capital, the Howth Peninsula Loop is a spectacular coastal route that offers stunning sea views and a mix of gentle and challenging climbs. This 30 km loop starts in Clontarf, before taking you around the scenic fishing village of Howth, where you can enjoy a post-ride seafood feast or a relaxed coffee at one its many local cafés.

4. The Ring of Beara, Co. Cork & Co. Kerry

For a truly breathtaking and challenging experience, the Ring of Beara offers some of the most scenic cycling in Ireland. With rolling hills, dramatic coastline, and peaceful, winding roads, this is a perfect route for a group looking to challenge themselves while soaking in the rugged beauty of the island. It’s also the perfect spot for planning a luxurious overnight stay in Kenmare or Glengarriff to turn your Galentine’s ride into a weekend getaway!

5. The Kingfisher Trail, Co. Cavan & Co. Leitrim

If you and your cycling besties love a lakeside spot, the Kingfisher Trail is an excellent option. Covering parts of Cavan and Leitrim, this scenic route allows for flexible distances and plenty of café stops along the way. Take it easy with a gentle lakeside or river cycle or challenge yourself with the full circuit – either way, you’ll be rewarded with some of Ireland’s most wonderful hidden rural gems.

Planning the perfect Galentine’s cycling trip

Once you’ve chosen your route, it’s time to make the day extra special! We’ve put together our top tips to make your Galentine’s ride truly memorable:

  • Pick a route that suits everyone’s ability level. Whether your group prefers a leisurely ride or a tough climb, make sure the route is enjoyable for all. One of Ireland’s designated greenways is a great option as they’re traffic free and well signposted.
  • Plan fun pit stops. Incorporate coffee breaks, brunch stops, or even a scenic picnic to keep the energy high and the mood light.
  • Capture the memories. Make sure to bring your phone or camera to snap some group photos along the way – perfect for sharing your adventure afterwards!
  • Celebrate post-ride. Whether it’s a spa day, a delicious meal, or just a well-earned slice of cake, take time to relax and enjoy your achievements with your friends.

Inspiring female cycling communities in Ireland

Cycling is always better with a supportive community, and Ireland is home to some fantastic women’s cycling initiatives that encourage more women to take to the roads.

Women on Wheels (WoW) is a nationwide programme by Cycling Ireland which aims at getting more women involved in cycling, offering group rides and skills sessions. Last year, we chatted to members of Westport Women on Wheels who were gearing up an epic Mizen to Malin charity cycle which was inspiring.

Each year, we also spotlight HER Outdoors Week, an initiative which encourages women and girls across the country to get outdoors and try something new – be it cycling, kayaking or something different!

This February, be sure to gather your cycling friends and hit the road for an unforgettable adventure. Whether you choose a relaxed coastal spin, a countryside escape, or a tough but rewarding climb, Ireland has a route to suit every group. So, pump up your tyres, grab your helmets, and get ready to celebrate friendship on two wheels!
