Fergal Guihen, an emergency department nurse and part-time farmer from Co. Roscommon, has embarked on a remarkable journey that combines his love for cycling with a commitment to charity fundraising.
Dubbed the ‘Rossie to Aussie’ challenge, Fergal is cycling a staggering 23,000 km from his hometown in Ireland to Australia. His journey, which began in March, is not just a personal quest but a mission to raise funds for two important causes: the Mayo Roscommon Hospice and North West STOP, a suicide prevention charity.
The motivation behind the journey
Fergal’s motivation for this monumental challenge is deeply personal. He has witnessed firsthand the vital work done by hospices and mental health organisations, both in his professional capacity as a nurse and in his community. His passion for cycling and adventure provided the perfect platform to support these causes, allowing him to combine his love for travel with a meaningful charitable mission.
The route and challenges
Fergal’s route is as ambitious as it is inspiring. Starting in Roscommon, he will travel through Europe, Asia, and finally Australia, covering 25 countries over the course of 11 months. The journey is entirely self-funded, with Fergal carrying minimal gear and relying on his physical and mental endurance to navigate through diverse terrains and climates. From the icy roads of Eastern Europe to the scorching deserts of Central Asia, every leg of the journey presents unique challenges.
As Fergal cycles through each country, he has also had the incredible opportunity to immerse himself in a variety of cultures, each offering its own unique experiences and challenges. From the bustling markets of Turkey to the serene landscapes of Georgia, Fergal has met countless people along the way who have shared their stories, food, and hospitality with him. His journey has been a rich tapestry of cultural exchanges, where language barriers are overcome by the universal language of kindness and shared humanity.

Despite some physical challenges, Fergal remains undaunted. His experience in solo travel, including previous cycling expeditions in Morocco and other countries, has equipped him with the skills and resilience needed to tackle this epic challenge. He has meticulously planned his route, prepared for various climates, and ensured that his bike is equipped to handle the long, arduous journey.
Community support and fundraising
The response to Fergal’s challenge has been overwhelming, with support pouring in from all four corners of Ireland. Local communities in Roscommon and beyond have rallied behind him, contributing to his fundraising efforts and spreading the word about his journey.
Fergal’s fundraising efforts are facilitated through his dedicated iDonate page, where supporters can track his progress and contribute to the Mayo Roscommon Hospice and North West STOP. The funds raised will go directly to these charities, helping them to continue their crucial work in palliative care and mental health support.
