Cycling Ireland recently launched the ‘Ride with Pride’ campaign, an initiative run in conjunction with LGBT+ organisations and Local Sports Partnerships to mark Pride Month.
To celebrate Pride 2023, we delve into the initiative in more detail, put the spotlight on some of the LGBT+ friendly clubs making waves, and offer some simple tips for those looking to join the club cycling community.
The initiative
‘Ride with Pride’ is a new initiative stemming from the shared commitment of Cycling Ireland, LGBT+ organisations and local sports partnerships to cultivate and encourage an environment of diversity, acceptance and unity in the world of Irish cycling.
‘Ride with Pride’ is centred around a series of cycling events scheduled throughout Pride Month, promoting inclusivity and celebrating what makes us all unique – all on two wheels. It also aims to showcase the importance of diversity and inclusion within the discipline of cycling.
Representation matters
The ‘Ride with Pride’ calendar is packed with a diverse range of rides, designed to cater to cyclists of all ages and abilities. The Dublin Pride Ride is one of the events which takes centre stage in the capital’s Pride sporting celebrations. Organised in collaboration with Dublin Pride, each year a relaxed city ride through the vibrant streets of Dublin is promised, in which participants can soak in the city’s summer ambience.
In recent years, LGBT+ inclusive cycling clubs have also made significant strides, creating a welcoming atmosphere for LGBT+ cyclists and allies alike. These clubs have become a driving force for inclusivity, organising regular rides, events and even participating in international LGBT+ sporting competitions.
Sporting Pride is a volunteer-run organisation here in Ireland that focuses on developing inclusivity across sport, and shines a light on some of these LGBT+ sports clubs. Dublin-based Monthly Cycles aims to bring together women, including those from the LGBT+ community, for monthly inclusive cycle rides around the city.
Getting started
Joining a cycling club can be a great way to meet like-minded people, improve fitness levels, and enjoy sport in a sociable way. If you’re considering joining a new cycling club, here are some top tips to help you get started:
1. Research: Look for clubs in your local area. Each club might have a different focus, such as competitive racing, leisurely social rides or advocacy work. Find the club that aligns best with your personal interests and goals. Cycling Ireland has a full list of cycling clubs on its website.
2. Start at your own pace: Don’t worry if you’re not a seasoned cyclist. Many clubs welcome beginners and will provide you with the support and training you need to improve your cycling skills.
3. Get stuck in: Once you’ve joined a new club, take the initiative to get involved when you can – on and off the bike. This could mean participating in group rides, volunteering for events, or simply spending time getting to know other members! The more involved you are, the more rewarding your experience will be.
4. Equipment and safety: Ensure that you have a bike that suits you and is in good condition. Always wear a helmet and keep safety at the forefront of everything you do. If you’re new to cycling, the club may offer advice or workshops on maintaining your bicycle and cycle safety.
5. Enjoy the ride: After all, joining a new cycling club should be an enjoyable experience – so make the most of it!
