The latest research, conducted by academics from Anglia Ruskin University’s School of Psychology and Sport Science, analysed data from over 7,000 adults. This study was the first of its kind to examine the benefits of attending live sports events on a large scale.
Commissioned by the British Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, the study found that attending live sporting events resulted in higher scores in two critical measurements of subjective well-being: life satisfaction and a sense of life being worthwhile, as well as reduced levels of loneliness. Previous research has shown that higher life satisfaction scores are associated with better physical health, successful ageing, and lower mortality rates.
Moreover, attending live sporting events leads to an increase in people’s sense that “life is worthwhile,” which is comparable in magnitude to the effect of finding employment. The study’s authors suggest that attending live sporting events could offer an accessible and effective public health tool for improving well-being and reducing loneliness, in addition to the initiatives that promote physical participation in sports.
That’s all pretty rad if you ask us! And in addition to the scientific evidence, anyone who regularly attends events could indeed tell you that there are plenty of reasons why it is a great idea. Let’s take a closer look at some of the benefits associated with attending live sporting events, so you can get excited about digging into the summer’s upcoming cycling calendar.
Witness the thrill of a race firsthand
One of the most obvious benefits of attending a live cycling event is the opportunity to experience the excitement of the race in person. While watching cycling on television can be enjoyable, it simply can’t compare to the adrenaline rush of being right there amid the action. When you’re at a live event, you can hear the sound of the riders whizzing past you, feel the wind on your face, and witness the drama and suspense of the race as it unfolds in front of your eyes.
Not only is it a stimulating experience, but it can also give you a new appreciation for the sport you know and love. You will likely find yourself admiring the incredible athleticism and skill of the riders, and perhaps feeling inspired to level up your own cycling game.
Be part of the community
We talk a lot about how awesome the cycling community is — and with good reason! Attending a live cycling event is not just about watching others race; it’s about coming together with a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for (arguably) the world’s best sport. From events small to large, you’ll have the opportunity to meet new people, make friends, and network with fellow cyclists.
As the aforementioned research harkens to — this sense of community can be incredibly powerful, particularly for those who may feel isolated or disconnected in their day-to-day lives. For some people, attending a live cycling event could be the start of a whole different appreciation for what makes the sport special and a way to connect with others who share that love.
Soak up the atmosphere
Cycling events are known for their festive atmosphere, and if you have been to one, you know why! From local food vendors and merchandise booths to live music and other forms of entertainment, there’s plenty to take in. Whether you’re there for a day or a whole weekend, it won’t take long to realise that the atmosphere is infectious. You’ll leave feeling energised and refreshed, having been part of something that arises from the unique alchemy that only occurs when people come together for a positive and shared pursuit.
Support your favourite cyclists
Whether we are talking about professional or amateur riders, attending a live cycling event is a great way to show your support. Being able to cheer someone on in person creates a whole different vibe—not to mention that you will also have the chance to take photos and score autographs. Particularly if you’re a serious cyclist, seeing some accomplished riders up close and personal can be incredibly inspiring. You may even pick up some tips and tricks from watching the pros in action!
Get the inspiration you need to push through those hard training sessions
Indeed, watching dedicated athletes push themselves to the limits of their abilities can be a massively motivating and eye-opening experience. If you feel that you are starting to plateau in your own cycling pursuits, this could be just the push you need to kick things up a notch. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, there’s something about being in the presence of such greatness and determination that can inspire you to achieve your own goals and aspirations.
At the end of the day, attending a live cycling event this summer is not just a fun way to spend your time, it’s an ideal means of meeting some like-minded folks and doing something positive for your well-being. So, whether you’re a serious cyclist or just enjoy a casual cruise, why not plan to attend an event in person this year? Who knows, it might just be the highlight of your summer!
