His Rampage 2013 video is breathtaking. We&#8217;re glad he agreed to meet with us and talk about the trends in his beloved sport.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>Geoff, your surname sounds Slavic. Do you know where your roots come from?<\/strong><br \/>\nGulevich is the Ukrainian name. It comes from my father\u2019s side. My mom\u2019s side is partly Danish and Scottish.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How would you describe your riding style?<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019ve always had pretty playful style. It\u2019s just looking like I have a good time on my bike &#8211; that\u2019s what people usually say about me and my riding. I have a good time in the air, I am very smooth and I really like to do steep things.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/5rXC8r1xiaQ?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<em>(Video: Youtube.com \/ Geoff Gulevich)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is mountain biking getting more dangerous?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes and no. Lots of things that we are doing are more risky than they used to be but the technology on the bikes, our riding skills and the technology of protection have progressed very much. If you ride on your skill level, it should be ok. You cannot blame the risk level for people getting hurt. It\u2019s about people taking their own risks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you remember your worst crash ever?<\/strong><br \/>\nThat one from the last year\u2019s Rampage was pretty bad. Somehow it\u2019s ok though. When I was 18 I broke my knee cap. I\u2019ve broken my wrist, separated my shoulder, broken my ankle, broken my shin, couple good cuts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you think about mountain biking in general? Is its popularity growing or rather falling?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s definitely going up as all the freestyle stuff. You can see it at Crankworx Festival. Every time the crowd gets bigger and bigger. There\u2019s more coverage. It was hosted on public TV now. It was seen all over the internet. I was on Fox News earlier this year and it\u2019s one of the biggest news channel in the world. Publicity of Red Bull Rampage gets also bigger and bigger. People are getting into it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2014\/09\/gg-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-25485\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2014\/09\/gg-4-620x413.jpg\" alt=\"gg 4\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>(Photo: Adam Marsal)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now you are preparing for a big event, the Red Bull Rampage. How do you feel when you drop from five meters high cliffs?<\/strong><br \/>\nEvery time it\u2019s scary. I\u2019m used to ride big lines like that, but it\u2019s an international competition and if you want to do better tricks than other people, then it\u2019s becoming scary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the best way to win the competition?<\/strong><br \/>\nHonestly, my best year was when I had a fun line and I was super comfortable on it. The approach to Rampage is to build a line you like. I\u2019ve been influenced by people who\u2019ve tried other things and it has never worked for me. You\u2019ve got to just build a funny, flowy and impressive looking line.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2014\/09\/gg-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25482\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2014\/09\/gg-1.jpg\" alt=\"gg 1\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>(Photo: Adam Marsal)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your other hobbies?<\/strong><br \/>\nI snowboard a lot, I do yoga, trail building, hiking, cliff jumping and snowshoeing. I just stay busy!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is yoga really helpful for professional athletes?<\/strong><br \/>\nI crash hard and thanks to yoga I have the flexibility. Last year I fell of 15 meters jump and my body was fine. In the air I think I\u2019m gonna die and I crumple into the dirt but I am all right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there any trends in riding styles? What is \u201ein\u201d these days?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s funny to see trends come and go. Cut off jeans are popular. Trends are funny because lot of people love the racer\u2019s style and lot of people push against it. But there\u2019s room for every style, really. I can\u2019t name a hot style for this year right now. Camo dress code is back every two years. That\u2019s a funny one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a common question but what is your favourite place to ride?<\/strong><br \/>\nThat\u2019s always a really tough question for me, because I enjoy so many different styles of riding. I think you can do pretty well with any sport depending on level you ride. It\u2019s just all about creating brand for yourself, building positive image in the media, but in the same time it\u2019s good to have fun and be a real person. It\u2019s really difficult to balance it altogether.
