{"id":534,"date":"2016-07-08T09:59:47","date_gmt":"2016-07-08T09:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/tour-de-france\/wide\/?p=534"},"modified":"2017-02-14T14:47:45","modified_gmt":"2017-02-14T14:47:45","slug":"tour-de-france-green-jersey-weekly-overview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2016\/07\/08\/tour-de-france-green-jersey-weekly-overview\/","title":{"rendered":"Tour de France: Green Jersey\u00a0Weekly Overview"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>An unexpected launch<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Manx Missile is back \u2013 he stormed Utah Beach in stage 1, and at the time of writing Mark Cavendish has won 3 stages.\u00a0 He rightly called out the naysayers in the cycling press, and has promptly dropped the hammer on their predictions.\u00a0 Seeing Cavendish jump out of Kittel\u2019s slipstream on Thursday should remind us of the Manxman in his prime.\u00a0 Cavendish will be happy to take the points \u2013 but he\u2019ll be happier knowing he\u2019s 3 stages closer to Eddie Merckx\u2019s total.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-538\" src=\"http:\/\/skoda-tdf.s3.amazonaws.com\/2\/2016\/07\/4224242_424242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1375\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Decided early?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Any rider wanting to wear the Green Jersey at the end of Le Tour 2016 needed to have a good start.\u00a0 As we head into one of the most punishing mountain schedules seen in recent tours, the sprinters will suffer \u2013 to such an extent that Cavendish admitted, \u201cI can\u2019t get to Paris with the Green Jersey\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Incredible Sulk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sagan was once famed for his Incredible Hulk celebration when winning stages.\u00a0 Combined with his penchant for wheelies, Sagan cultivated a bit of a <em>rock star<\/em> image.\u00a0 Sadly that persona has disappeared, and instead Sagan was heard bemoaning the lack of safety in the peloton earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p>Has Sagan\u2019s first stint in the Yellow Jersey changed his attitude from Hulk to sulk?\u00a0 The reality is that Le Tour arrived at Stage 7 without any rider abandoning the race.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-539\" src=\"http:\/\/skoda-tdf.s3.amazonaws.com\/2\/2016\/07\/484894894_4984846949.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1375\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>British double?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Stage 6 saw two Brits stand on the podium in Le Tour.\u00a0 One of them was Cavendish, and the other was Daniel McLay \u2013 a 24-year-old in his 2nd season competing as a professional.<\/p>\n<p>McLay will be one to watch for the future, and his team Fortuneo-Vital Concept will be pleased with his monumental effort to get on the podium.\u00a0 We\u2019ll be impressed if any readers can identify another stage finish in Le Tour where two Brits ended in the top 3 together.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Closer than it appears<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With Cavendish playing down his chances of winning the Green Jersey, and the fact that there\u2019s a punishing run of mountain stages on the way, it\u2019s difficult to predict who\u2019ll take the most points.\u00a0 If Sagan keeps his head, his strength in the mountains means he\u2019s capable of challenging the race favourite, Kittel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An unexpected launch The Manx Missile is back \u2013 he stormed Utah Beach in stage 1, and at the time [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":27,"featured_media":146472,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[329],"tags":[845,846,433,844],"global-categories":[],"class_list":["post-534","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-road-cycling","tag-tdf","tag-tdf-2016","tag-tour-de-france","tag-tour-de-france-2016"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.3 (Yoast SEO v25.9) -
