And spring is the perfect time to tour this picture-postcard landscape before the summer temperatures rise and tourist hordes descend in full force. Specific areas to explore include the famous Chianti wine region south of Florence, the rolling green and gold hills surrounding Sienna and the tranquil countryside surrounding the hill towns of Volterra and San Gimignano.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/05\/1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26721\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/05\/1-600x270.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be cycling smooth paved roads, and on all but the major roads you won\u2019t encounter much car traffic. And what you do will likely give you a wide berth. Expect the valleys to be flat or gently rolling, though the Chianti region comes with some difficult ascents, as do all approaches to hill towns, so be prepared. But consider yourself warned \u2013 the region is famous for its delicacies, in particular black truffles and foie gras. You may take in more calories than you burn from all the great restaurants on offer here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/05\/2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26722\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/05\/2-600x270.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Routes here include the ride from the vineyards of St Emilion near Bordeaux along the banks of the Dordogne to Rocamadour, a tiny village that appears to climb up the granite hillside. From there you can follow the lush green Vers valley towards the wine capital of the Lot. You\u2019ll be cycling on roads with light to moderate traffic. The trek takes in the beautiful snowcapped Grossglockner (Austria\u2019s highest peak), Hohe Tauern National Park, splendid Zell am See, and numerous other mountain lakes perfect for swimming. Expect lots of long downhills and flats with a steep ascent to Berchtesgaden National Park, as you drop from 1,628m at Gerlos Pass to 443m in Salzburg.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/05\/3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26723\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/05\/3-600x270.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The route comprises cycle paths and road riding, usually with a sizable shoulder, as you pass through quaint villages, narrow ravines, wide valleys and sunny meadows bursting with blossoming flowers. If you want to avoid the ascent to Berchtesgaden, simply continue on straight to Lofer, where you can take a small detour to the Seisenberg gorge, where the Weissenbach river has cut through the limestone over thousands of years, before contuing the downhill to Salzburg.<\/p>\n<p>Route: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.cz\/maps\/dir\/Krimml,+Rakousko\/Salzburg,+Rakousko\/@47.5434504,12.6024009,10z\/data=!4m15!4m14!1m5!1m1!1s0x4777b913baf7a31f:0x7181a02c84da765a!2m2!1d12.1772737!2d47.2208924!1m5!1m1!1s0x47769adda908d4b1:0xc1e183a1412af73d!2m2!1d13.05501!2d47.80949!3e1!5i2\" target=\"_blank\">One-way from Krimml to Salzburg via Berchtesgaden \u2013 143 km<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"dolomites\">THE DOLOMITES, ITALY<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/05\/profimedia-0071026671.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26718\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/05\/profimedia-0071026671-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, if you\u2019re looking for something more dramatic and harder on the legs, with a dose of adrenaline on steep and winding downhills, along with spectacular views, turn to the magnificent Italian Dolomites. This is one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the world and a cyclist\u2019s paradise. It\u2019s also one of the most challenging, offering backbreaking climbs to Passo Sella, Passo Campolongo, Passo Gardena, Tre Cime and the famous climb to Passo Giau at 2,233m. But the fit and determined are rewarded with stunning views of this Unesco World Heritage site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/05\/4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26724\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/05\/4-600x270.png\" alt=\"4\" width=\"600\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ride here is on good and safe asphalt roads. But beware of dark tunnels, steeps chasms and endless hairpin turns that make for exhilarating downhills. This is one ride you will always remember.
