The city of lights will add over 700 kilometres of cycle paths, including 80 kilometres of cycling superhighways, by 2020. Coupled with financial incentives, the city aims to transform itself into the cycling capital of the world.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In an effort to tackle its air pollution problem, Paris is putting all its weight behind an ambitious EUR 150 million cycling initiative, known as \u2018plan v\u00e9lo\u2019. Whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/blog\/26463\/bike-friendly-cities-seville\/\" target=\"_blank\">Seville, which turned itself from a cycle-phobic city into a cycler\u2019s delight<\/a>, took its urban ridership from zero to nine percent, Paris aims to triple the share of all trips made by bike from five to 15 percent in the next five years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/04\/profimedia-0004234094.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26583 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/04\/profimedia-0004234094-600x451.jpg\" alt=\"Eiffel Tower\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To do so, the city will double its network of bike lanes to 1,400 kilometres. 80 kilometres of this will comprise five protected two-way cycling superhighways running east-west and north-south alongside main roads and avenues, including the famous Champs-\u00c9lyse\u00e9s. Additionally, motor-vehicle traffic will be limited to 30 Km\/h on streets with cycling lanes and 50 Km\/h on wider avenues. There will also be 10,000 secure biking parking spaces, as well as financial incentives for buying a bike.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/04\/profimedia-0011863881.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26584\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/04\/profimedia-0011863881-600x399.jpg\" alt=\"Velib bicycles from a docking station in Paris\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Building on the city\u2019s V\u00e9lib city-bike hire scheme \u2013 one of the largest in the world \u2013 the new plan looks to improve every aspect of the Parisian cycling experience. It takes into consideration each step of the cycling journey, from buying a bike, to parking it, to riding it in safety. Most importantly, the plan views cycling not as providing individual facilities, but as an integrated system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/04\/profimedia-0205122867.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26585\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2015\/04\/profimedia-0205122867-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"Cycling in Paris\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Christophe Najdovski, the city\u2019s head of transport and public space, told French daily Le Figaro, \u2018The Netherlands has been working on [cycling] since the 70s.
