In fact, this level of intake may even lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and Type 2 diabetes. However, the benefits seem to depend on how you consume it.

Coffee’s potential perks

Moderate coffee consumption, particularly without added sugars or fillers, is linked to a range of cardiovascular benefits. Studies suggest that drinking 2-4 cups of caffeinated coffee daily may reduce the risk of heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. Coffee also contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may contribute to its positive effects.

Interestingly, while caffeine can temporarily reduce insulin sensitivity, regular black coffee drinkers appear to have a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. These products often contain highly concentrated caffeine, sometimes 3-4 times more per serving than regular coffee. Such high doses have been associated with sharp increases in blood pressure and irregular heart rhythms, even in healthy individuals. For those with existing cardiovascular conditions, the risks may be even greater.

Blood pressure and heart rhythm

The relationship between caffeine and blood pressure is complex. For those with optimal blood pressure, consuming 1-3 cups of coffee a day may slightly increase the risk of developing high blood pressure. Surprisingly, drinking more than 3 cups per day has been linked to a lower risk. Meanwhile, high doses of caffeine, such as those in energy drinks, can cause significant blood pressure spikes.

When it comes to heart rhythm, moderate coffee consumption (1-3 cups daily) does not appear to increase the risk of atrial fibrillation. However, it may be linked to more premature ventricular contractions, which are early heartbeats originating in the lower chambers. Very high caffeine doses, like those in energy drinks, have been associated with abnormal heart rhythms even in low-risk individuals.

Not all caffeine is the same

The source of caffeine matters. Coffee, tea, chocolate, soda, and energy drinks all contain caffeine, but their effects on the body can differ. Tea, for example, has been linked to reduced risks of atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and stroke, similar to coffee. Energy drinks, however, often include additional ingredients that speed up caffeine absorption, potentially increasing cardiovascular risks.

What’s the takeaway?

For most of us, up to 400 mg of caffeine per day from sources such as coffee, tea or chocolate is safe and may even offer heart health benefits.
