In road cycling, at least, the rules are relatively simple. You study the route and find a choke point, a section where the riders slow down or somewhere with a magnificent view of the valley below. Otherwise, you may see nothing more than a blur of colours passing at 70 kph while your phone is still trying to focus on the police motorcycle ahead of the race.

Sure, finding the right spot at a road race still requires some knowledge of the sport. Doing the same at the MTB Worlds, however, requires at least four years at university, followed by a written and oral exam. Pick the wrong place, and you can spend two hours listening to several thousand people having a wonderful time somewhere behind the trees.

Val di Sole has made its courses more spectator-friendly for 2026, but watching from the side of the trail still requires a plan. You don’t have four years to study for it, so here’s a quick crash course on how to watch the MTB Worlds live.

First, decide what you’re prepared to miss

Watching any cycling race live means accepting that the decisive move may happen 100 metres away. Choose one corner, climb or technical feature, and everything outside your field of vision becomes someone else’s excellent afternoon.

The MTB Worlds add more trees and several completely different course formats to the problem. So, decide what you want before the race begins. Find a technical section for lines, mistakes and overtakes. Stay near the finish for the result and atmosphere. Prioritise a compact part of the course if you want to see the riders repeatedly.

There is no perfect viewing position. There are only different ways to miss out, and the wrong spot is usually the one you choose without deciding which kind of missing out you can tolerate.

For downhill, choose one section and commit

A downhill rider passes your position once. After that, your next opportunity to see them may be on the podium, assuming the person in front of you hasn’t brought a flag the size of Luxembourg.

Stay near the finish if you want the timing, winner reactions and biggest atmosphere. Head into the forest if you want to compare lines, watch riders wrestle with the new off-camber section or join the larger fan area around Scott Jump. The Experience Pass includes the Daolasa gondola, allowing spectators to reach the upper course and walk down beside the track.

Do that before the final begins. The Black Snake is 2.1 km long and drops 550 metres, so following the action on foot turns you from a spectator into an ill-equipped trail runner.

Choose one feature, arrive early and stay there. Moving halfway through the final is an excellent way to watch the rainbow jersey being decided on live timing while standing between two better viewing spots.

For XCO and XCR, build a small viewing loop

XCO rewards controlled restlessness. Riders return every lap, giving you time to move between two nearby viewing points. Choose one technical section and one climb or open area, then connect them using the marked spectator paths.

Keep the loop small. The XCO course is 3.5 km long with around 150 metres of climbing, but this is not an invitation to complete your own six-lap race while wearing jeans and carrying three beers. Every ambitious transfer creates another opportunity for the leaders to attack somewhere you have just left.

For the relay, keep one of your positions close to the changeover. Rider order can make the leaderboard deeply misleading, and disappearing into the forest for several laps may leave you wondering why the nation that led by 40 seconds is now eighth.

Two good positions beat five hurried ones. Move early in the race, then settle down for the final laps before your FOMO turns the event into recreational hiking.

For short track, stop moving

Short track is the exception. The organisers have designed the 2026 course so that almost the entire race is visible from the finish area.

Find a clear view, claim the surrounding half-metre of ground and stay there. The race lasts only 20 to 30 minutes, so one expedition for a better angle, food or beer can remove a statistically significant part of the World Championships.

Leaving the finish area because you heard louder cheering elsewhere is the spectator equivalent of abandoning front-row seats to investigate an interesting noise in the corridor.

Keep live timing in your pocket

A technical section shows you how riders are gaining or losing time, but rarely tells you what is happening elsewhere. A roar from deeper in the forest confirms only that several thousand people have seen something you haven’t.

Keep the official live timing open between passes. During downhill, the splits reveal whether a spectacular line was actually fast. During XCO, the gaps tell you whether the rider who just passed is attacking, fading or merely involved in a private race for 23rd.

Use the phone to get some context, then put it away before becoming someone who travelled to the MTB Worlds to watch the MTB Worlds on a six-inch screen.

Take the train to the right forest

Daolasa station sits directly beside the race village, finish area and gondola. Enhanced services run every 30 minutes between Malé and Mezzana through Sunday, making the train the simplest way to arrive without beginning the day in a traffic queue.

Drivers can use the free Park & Ride areas at Malé, Dimaro and Marilleva 900, then complete the journey by train. Alternatively, the dedicated event car parks cost €5 per day and sit around one kilometre from the venue.

Walking a kilometre is hardly intimidating to a cycling fan. Walking it after spending an hour searching for parking, however, is an inefficient warm-up for the much steeper banks you will soon be climbing voluntarily.

Now stop moving and watch the race

Once you’ve chosen your spot, stop treating every distant roar as proof that somewhere else is better. Another section will always be louder, steeper or occupied by someone who has just witnessed a spectacular crash.

You came to see the speed up close, hear the crowd react before the rider appears and spend several hours standing on terrain no sensible person would select for standing. Pick your patch of forest and commit to it.

You will miss something. Everyone will. Just make sure you don’t miss the entire race while searching for the perfect place to watch it.

Watching a cycling race live can feel more like a tactical battle than spectating at a sporting event.
