Cycling is relatively gentle on the joints, indoor trainers remove the weather problem and many of us own enough technical clothing to survive an expedition across Iceland.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet we are remarkably good at making a simple ride feel logistically impossible.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is the route to plan, the forecast to examine and the question of whether 45 minutes is really worth putting bib shorts on for. If two or three hours are unavailable, the entire session often disappears.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runners tend to approach things differently. Shoes on, out of the door, 35 minutes completed and back home before the cyclist has chosen the appropriate gilet.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running culture has normalised several behaviours cyclists could use more of: short sessions, repeatable routines, properly easy days and training that does not become a test of personal character.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Accept that short sessions count<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyclists often think in distances and destinations. A proper ride should reach a particular town, include several climbs or at least justify the laundry it creates. Runners are more comfortable prescribing time: 30 minutes easy, 45 minutes steady or six short intervals within an hour.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2020\/12\/10\/training-frequency-why-2-short-rides-are-better-than-1-long-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A short ride<\/a> cannot replace every long endurance session, but it can preserve training frequency and provide a useful stimulus. Forty-five minutes is enough for an easy aerobic ride or a focused interval workout. Even 20 minutes of gentle spinning can maintain the routine on a busy day.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The alternative is often not a superior two-hour ride. It is no riding at all.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Make starting automatic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motivation is unreliable, especially during busy weeks and bad weather. Habits are more dependable.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that exercising in a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39225981\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consistent context<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps the behaviour become more automatic. That might mean riding immediately after work every Tuesday, using the turbo while watching a particular series or cycling to work every Thursday.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepare your kit in advance and create a default 45-minute route or saved indoor session. Fewer decisions mean fewer opportunities to cancel.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also helps to have a minimum version of each workout. If the planned hour is impossible, ride for 25 minutes instead. Consistency does not require perfect adherence. It requires avoiding the cycle of ambitious plans, disruption, guilt and complete disappearance.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Let easy days remain easy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good runners are often disciplined about running slowly. They understand that an easy session has a purpose and that turning it into an accidental tempo run only damages the next important workout.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyclists are more vulnerable to the philosophy of \u201ceasy until overtaken\u201d.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recovery ride becomes competitive on the first climb. An endurance session turns into threshold work after joining a faster group. The result is plenty of medium-hard riding: tiring enough to generate fatigue but not focused enough to replace a structured hard session.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Successful endurance athletes complete a large proportion of their training at low intensity. A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35418513\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review of elite runners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found a predominantly pyramidal intensity distribution built around a hard-day\u2013easy-day pattern.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyclists do not need to copy an exact percentage. They should copy the separation of purposes. On an easy day, ride conversationally and return feeling that you could comfortably have continued.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easy training is not failed hard training. It is what makes the hard sessions possible.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Give hard workouts a job<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runners rarely begin an interval session with the instruction to \u201cgo out and make it hurt somehow\u201d. The workout normally targets something specific: threshold pace, short repetitions, hills or race speed.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before a hard ride, decide what the important work is. It might be four threshold intervals, repeated five-minute climbing efforts or a controlled block at race intensity. Unfortunately, this can make every session carry too much emotional weight.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A completed workout becomes proof of discipline. A shortened one suggests weakness. Missing a ride feels like a character defect. One poor session then becomes a crisis rather than an ordinary part of training.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runners encounter bad days often enough to develop a practical relationship with them. Sometimes the legs are heavy, the pace is slow and the session is reduced. Training resumes the following day without a formal investigation.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyclists should do the same. A workout is information, not a verdict. Shorten it when necessary and return to the schedule without trying to repay a fictional training debt.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The important skill is not never missing. It is restarting quickly.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Build repeatable weeks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One spectacular six-hour Saturday may produce an impressive activity file and several days of fatigue. It does not automatically create better fitness than a balanced week containing one longer ride, one focused hard session and several shorter easy rides.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best plan is not the most ambitious one. It is the one that fits around your normal job, family commitments and recovery capacity. And can still be repeated next month.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyclists are very good at celebrating epic days. We could become better at respecting the ordinary ones.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those 30- and 45-minute rides rarely make memorable stories.
