Michael Valgren has won big races before. Classics, one-day races, WorldTour victories. But one thing was missing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI missed this on my resume,\u201d Valgren said after winning stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia.<\/a> \u201cI think I deserve this, I think my career has been really good, but I needed this stage win.\u201d<\/p>\n

After years of injuries, setbacks and rebuilding, the Dane finally took his first Grand Tour stage victory with a perfectly timed late attack in Andalo.<\/p>\n

A breakaway that never fully settled<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The stage itself was chaotic almost from the beginning.<\/p>\n

A large breakaway formed early, but cooperation never really clicked, leaving the group in a strange limbo for much of the day. Close enough to survive, but never comfortably clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a strange day, it was such a big group and we never worked together. I was getting kind of pissed to be honest, like why don\u2019t we just try to race? Then we for sure raced a lot in the end,\u201d Valgren laughed.<\/p>\n

By the final climb, the hesitation disappeared. The attacks started properly, the group split apart, and the race became far more selective.<\/p>\n

Winning without waiting for a sprint<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Valgren knew exactly how he wanted to win it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a funny thing, people think I\u2019m fast, but I\u2019m actually quite slow,\u201d Valgren said after the race. \u201cThis morning, Adam Blythe asked me about my maximum peak power and it was ridiculously embarrassing to be honest. So yeah, this is my move, and when I have good legs, I\u2019m pretty good at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside the final kilometre, he attacked before anyone else could start thinking about the sprint.<\/p>\n

It worked immediately.<\/p>\n

Einer Rubio cracked first. Behind him, Andreas Leknessund and Damiano Caruso tried to respond, but the gap opened too quickly.<\/p>\n

Hanging on at the limit<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The move looked smooth from the outside. It didn\u2019t feel that way.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was super-hard, I was really on my limit,\u201d Valgren said after the finish. \u201cI didn\u2019t have any more food for a while, because the cars were really behind us. I was really worried and thought I was going to bonk. I was lucky it wasn\u2019t 500m longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

That detail suited the stage perfectly: a win built less on dominance than judgement and survival.<\/p>\n

Valgren attacked at exactly the right moment, not because he had huge reserves left, but because he knew waiting longer probably wouldn\u2019t help him.<\/p>\n

Back where he wanted to be<\/strong><\/h2>\n

What gave the victory extra weight was everything that came before it.<\/p>\n

After his serious crash at the 2022 Tour de France, Valgren spent a long period simply trying to return to racing. For a while, even getting back to this level looked uncertain.<\/p>\n

Now, he has a Giro stage. Well deserved!<\/p>\n
