As he was racing towards the finish line of Sunday\u2019s Amstel Gold Race with Lidl-Trek\u2019s Mattias Skjelmose, Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull\u2013BORA\u2013hansgrohe) looked around a few times. One could have said that he was looking for Tadej Poga\u010dar because that would have been a d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu of last year\u2019s finale, which Skjelmose won in a sprint over the two superstars. But Poga\u010dar was not in this year\u2019s race, and Skjelmose did not win this time. Evenepoel rode a mature and confident race and out-manoeuvred and easily out-sprinted last year\u2019s winner.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Remco\u2019s biggest win for Red Bull<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It was his first win since February, his first win in the Amstel and his biggest victory for his new team. At the beginning of the year, Evenepoel had targeted this race and the other two Ardennes Classics, Wednesday\u2019s La Fl\u00e8che Wallonne and next Sunday\u2019s Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge, where he will see Poga\u010dar again.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a flashback to last year,\u201d Evenepoel told TNT Sports after the race. \u201cI have more confidence now. I felt on the climbs I was the strongest today, and that [Skjelmose] was on the limit when taking pulls. I had a lot of confidence I could finish it in a sprint.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saying he was a big fan of Amstel Gold\u2019s \u201cshort hard climbs,\u201d he added: \u201cIt\u2019s the most beautiful victory of the season, but every week there\u2019s a new beautiful [race]. This race, other than the monuments, is very high on my list. It\u2019s in the top eight victories in my career.\u201d<\/p>\n
