And yet every ride feels like you\u2019re pedalling through porridge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"308\" data-end=\"471\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"624\">Welcome to late-winter fatigue \u2014 that special time of year when your legs are allegedly \u201cbuilding base\u201d but feel more like they\u2019re building resentment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"626\" data-end=\"664\">Let\u2019s unpack what\u2019s actually going on.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"666\" data-end=\"706\"><strong>It\u2019s not just you. It\u2019s still winter.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"927\">If you live anywhere north of Girona, the end of winter is basically a controlled experiment in low mood and low watts. Days are getting longer, yes \u2014 but your body is still catching up after months of reduced daylight.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"929\" data-end=\"952\">Your body doesn\u2019t love:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"954\" data-end=\"1055\">\n<li data-start=\"954\" data-end=\"978\">\n<p data-start=\"956\" data-end=\"978\">Training in the dark<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"979\" data-end=\"1001\">\n<p data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1001\">Waking in the dark<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1002\" data-end=\"1032\">\n<p data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1032\">Returning home in the dark<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1033\" data-end=\"1055\">\n<p data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1055\">Existing in the dark<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1057\" data-end=\"1283\">Even if you\u2019re nailing your zone 2 sessions, the hormonal backdrop isn\u2019t the same as in May. Lower light exposure affects melatonin, serotonin, and cortisol rhythms \u2014 all of which influence how energised (or wrecked) you feel.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1285\" data-end=\"1318\">You\u2019re not weak. You\u2019re seasonal.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1320\" data-end=\"1358\"><strong>Base training is sneakily fatiguing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1494\">Winter \u201ceasy miles\u201d are sold as gentle aerobic conditioning. And yes, metabolically they\u2019re manageable. But cumulatively? They add up.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1651\">Long steady rides increase overall training load, stress connective tissue, require glycogen replenishment, and add systemic fatigue even if RPE feels low.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1653\" data-end=\"1810\">Because you\u2019re not doing eye-watering intervals, you may underestimate how much fatigue is accumulating. Your Training Stress Score knows. Your ego does not.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1812\" data-end=\"1956\">This is especially true if you\u2019re stacking gym work on top \u2014 heavy lifts plus long rides equals a very polite but very persistent fatigue curve.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1958\" data-end=\"1991\"><strong>You\u2019re probably under-fuelling<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1993\" data-end=\"2035\">Let\u2019s address the quiet villain of winter.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2037\" data-end=\"2158\">When intensity drops, many riders subconsciously reduce carbohydrate intake. \u201cI\u2019m just doing base.\u201d Yes. For three hours.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2160\" data-end=\"2314\">Cold weather also blunts thirst and hunger signals. Add in a slight desire to \u201clean out before race season\u201d and suddenly you\u2019re chronically under-fuelled.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2316\" data-end=\"2334\">Signs this is you:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2336\" data-end=\"2484\">\n<li data-start=\"2336\" data-end=\"2368\">\n<p data-start=\"2338\" data-end=\"2368\">Flat legs that don\u2019t respond<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2400\">\n<p data-start=\"2371\" data-end=\"2400\">Elevated resting heart rate<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2401\" data-end=\"2415\">\n<p data-start=\"2403\" data-end=\"2415\">Poor sleep<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2416\" data-end=\"2484\">\n<p data-start=\"2418\" data-end=\"2484\">Unusual irritability (you argued about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2020\/12\/07\/how-to-achieve-perfect-tyre-pressure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tyre pressure,<\/a> didn\u2019t you?)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2486\" data-end=\"2565\">Winter is not the time to diet aggressively. It\u2019s low-level colds, office germs, poor indoor air quality, travel stress, and kid exposure (if you have them, you know).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2753\" data-end=\"2923\">Even if you\u2019re not \u201cill\u201d, your immune system may be working overtime. That background inflammatory load contributes to fatigue in ways your training plan doesn\u2019t capture.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2925\" data-end=\"2998\">Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.garmin.com\/\">Garmin<\/a> might say \u201cProductive.\u201d Your body might say \u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3000\" data-end=\"3025\"><strong>The psychological drag<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3027\" data-end=\"3087\">Summer fatigue feels heroic. Winter fatigue feels pointless.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3089\" data-end=\"3226\">Motivation costs energy. Riding indoors costs energy. Layering up costs energy. Convincing yourself it\u2019s character-building costs energy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3228\" data-end=\"3287\">If your rides are mostly solo, mostly indoors, mostly grey.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3289\" data-end=\"3430\">Your brain registers monotony. Mental fatigue bleeds into physical fatigue. You\u2019re not just tired in your legs \u2014 you\u2019re tired of the context.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3432\" data-end=\"3467\"><strong>You might actually need a deload<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3469\" data-end=\"3498\">Here\u2019s the uncomfortable bit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3500\" data-end=\"3638\">A lot of riders treat winter as \u201cgrind season\u201d and postpone proper recovery until spring. But fatigue doesn\u2019t respect calendar narratives.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3640\" data-end=\"3767\">If you\u2019ve been training consistently for 6\u20138 weeks without a genuine reduction in volume, your system may simply be asking for:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3769\" data-end=\"3887\">\n<li data-start=\"3769\" data-end=\"3813\">\n<p data-start=\"3771\" data-end=\"3813\">4\u20136 days of significantly reduced volume<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3814\" data-end=\"3838\">\n<p data-start=\"3816\" data-end=\"3838\">A few full rest days<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3839\" data-end=\"3858\">\n<p data-start=\"3841\" data-end=\"3858\">Sleep extension<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3859\" data-end=\"3887\">\n<p data-start=\"3861\" data-end=\"3887\">Higher carbohydrate intake<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3889\" data-end=\"3931\">That\u2019s not weakness. That\u2019s periodisation.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3933\" data-end=\"3955\"><strong>What to do about it<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3957\" data-end=\"4029\">Before you panic and Google \u201covertraining syndrome\u201d at 1 a.m., consider:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4031\" data-end=\"4128\"><strong data-start=\"4031\" data-end=\"4058\">Increase light exposure<\/strong><br data-start=\"4058\" data-end=\"4061\" \/>Morning daylight, even 10\u201315 minutes, helps reset circadian rhythm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4130\" data-end=\"4207\"><strong data-start=\"4130\" data-end=\"4158\">Fuel long rides properly<\/strong><br data-start=\"4158\" data-end=\"4161\" \/>60\u201390g carbs per hour still applies in zone 2.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4209\" data-end=\"4277\"><strong data-start=\"4209\" data-end=\"4236\">Plan structured deloads<\/strong><br data-start=\"4236\" data-end=\"4239\" \/>Not accidental ones. Intentional ones.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4279\" data-end=\"4396\"><strong data-start=\"4279\" data-end=\"4301\">Shorten some rides<\/strong><br data-start=\"4301\" data-end=\"4304\" \/>Two high-quality 90-minute rides may serve you better than one soul-crushing four-hour slog.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4398\" data-end=\"4503\"><strong data-start=\"4398\" data-end=\"4421\">Add something novel<\/strong><br data-start=\"4421\" data-end=\"4424\" \/>Gravel detour. Skills session. Group ride. Anything that isn\u2019t turbo + Netflix.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4505\" data-end=\"4521\"><strong>The good news<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4523\" data-end=\"4585\">Late-winter fatigue is usually not failure. It\u2019s accumulation. If you respect it now \u2014 fuel well, recover deliberately, manage load \u2014 you\u2019ll come out of winter durable rather than depleted.
