October caf\u00e9 stops are not like summer caf\u00e9 stops.<\/strong> Gone is the carefree lounging, the exposed tanlines, the effortless sipping of espressos in the sun.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

October caf\u00e9 stops are survival scenarios<\/em>. A liminal space between hope and hypothermia. The coffee is hotter. The desperation is realer. The personalities? Sharpened by windchill and bad decisions.<\/p>\n

Here are the five types of cyclists you\u2019ll meet, and possibly become, when the temperature drops and the pastries are the only warm thing within 20km.<\/p>\n

The shivering latte hugger<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You\u2019ll spot them instantly: both hands wrapped around a mug like it’s the last source of heat on Earth. Helmet still on. Jaw chattering. Eyes hollow.<\/p>\n

They do not speak. They do not sip. They simply absorb<\/em> heat via ceramic osmosis.<\/p>\n

Their fingers no longer work. Their gloves are soaked. They\u2019ve forgotten how to chew. Their bike is parked at a 45-degree angle because they no longer possess the core stability to use a kickstand.<\/p>\n

You offer them a napkin. They blink once.<\/p>\n

They are not okay.<\/p>\n

The smug guy in merino<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This one is thriving<\/em>.
\nHe\u2019s warm. He\u2019s dry. He looks like a walking Rapha<\/a> catalogue and smells faintly of eucalyptus and self-righteousness.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told you guys merino was the move,\u201d he says, unwrapping his banana bread with steady hands and clear sinuses.<\/p>\n

He does not appear to have sweat glands. Or regrets.
\nHe doesn\u2019t need<\/em> overshoes, he says. \u201cWool socks do the job.\u201d
\nYou consider stabbing him with your spoon.<\/p>\n

The compulsive adjuster<\/strong><\/h2>\n

They arrive and immediately start rearranging everything: gloves off, gilet unzipped, base layer halfway removed, neck buff turned into a hat, hat turned into a napkin.<\/p>\n

They cannot sit still. They are locked in a battle with their own clothing. Their thermal tights are inside-out. Their jersey is now a cape. Their shoe covers are somewhere near the espresso machine.<\/p>\n

They speak only in sighs and muttered phrases like \u201cI knew<\/em> I shouldn\u2019t have worn the windstopper.\u201d<\/p>\n

They will leave in a completely different outfit than they arrived in. Possibly someone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n

The one who brought a full change of clothes like a weirdo (a genius)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

They reach into their saddlebag like Mary Poppins.<\/p>\n

Out comes a dry base layer. Then socks. Then a spare neck warmer. Then a second set of gloves, warm from the depths of their smug, organised soul.<\/p>\n

You laugh at first. Then you cry a little. Because this person is not cold<\/em>. They are sipping hot chocolate in a clean jersey while you shiver in wet Lycra<\/a> that smells like agricultural runoff.<\/p>\n

You call them a weirdo. But you also call them clever. Quietly. In your frostbitten heart.<\/p>\n

The \u201cwe should probably head back\u201d denialist<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This one refuses to believe the temperature is dropping.
\n\u201cNo, we\u2019ll warm up on the way home,\u201d they say, as sleet begins to fall sideways.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re the first to suggest outdoor seating. The first to remove their gloves. The last to admit that maybe, just maybe<\/em>, October isn\u2019t late summer anymore.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll find them twenty minutes later, standing in the wind, crying into their cappuccino foam, whispering: \u201cI thought it would be sunny again by now.\u201d<\/p>\n

It won\u2019t. It never is.<\/p>\n

Closing thoughts from the pastry cabinet<\/strong><\/h2>\n

October caf\u00e9 stops are where cycling gets real. Your limits are tested. Your layering strategy is exposed. Your friendships are forged in shared suffering and wet saddles.<\/p>\n

So bring gloves. Bring a plan. Bring a dry buff in a ziplock bag. Or just bring cash and enough charm to beg for indoor seating and a warm slice of banana bread.<\/p>\n
