And <em>they<\/em> arrive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Rider\u2122.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They roll up on a spotless aero bike, smile wide, kit coordinated like it\u2019s effortless, and say things like: \u201cI\u2019m just here to enjoy the ride. I don\u2019t really know what I\u2019m doing yet \ud83d\ude05\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a lie.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stage 1: Judgement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You scan them like a robot from the future.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clean chain? Check.<\/li>\n<li>Calf definition? Concerning.<\/li>\n<li>No saddlebag? Bold.<\/li>\n<li>Oakleys upside down on the helmet? Worrying signs of confidence.<\/li>\n<li>Water bottle with weird homemade electrolyte mix? Still smiling.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re really strong,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They mean it. And that makes it so much worse.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stage 3: Internal collapse<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your thoughts spiral:<br \/>\nHow are they this fast?<br \/>\nDo they even sweat?<br \/>\nDo they used to be pro? But still.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You ride next to your usual group buddy and whisper,<br \/>\n\u201cThey\u2019re <em>too<\/em> strong, right? Like\u2026 it\u2019s weird?\u201d<br \/>\nThey just nod.<br \/>\nThey&#8217;re also suffering.<br \/>\nYou feel seen. But not healed.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stage 5: Acceptance (but resentfully)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At coffee, The New Rider offers to buy a round.<br \/>\nYou accept. Because you&#8217;re tired. And you want oat milk.<br \/>\nYou consider them closely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re nice.<br \/>\nThey\u2019re funny.<br \/>\nThey compliment your socks.<br \/>\nThey use actual thank-you hand signals in traffic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to hate them. But you can\u2019t.<br \/>\nThey\u2019re just a better cyclist. And, insultingly, a better person.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Epilogue: You will stalk their Strava<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You say your goodbyes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you will:<br \/>\nFind them on <a href=\"http:\/\/strava.com\">Strava.<\/a><br \/>\nScroll back six months to check their training volume.<br \/>\nCompare every ride.<br \/>\nCreate a private segment they\u2019ll never see, just so you can win something.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And eventually, you\u2019ll message them and say:<br \/>\n\u201cGreat ride today. Want to go out again next week?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And they\u2019ll say yes. Because they\u2019re new. And kind. And don\u2019t yet know that <em>you<\/em> are spiralling emotionally every time they casually pull on the front into a headwind at 38km\/h.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Final thoughts: It\u2019s fine. (It\u2019s not fine. But it will be.)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will always be someone stronger. Someone newer. Someone who says \u201cI\u2019m just getting into it\u201d while riding you into the pavement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here\u2019s the thing:<br \/>\nThey\u2019ll become part of the group.<br \/>\nThey\u2019ll eventually have a bad day.<br \/>\nAnd when they do, you\u2019ll be the one saying:<br \/>\n\u201cTake my wheel. You\u2019ve got this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because cycling humbles all of us eventually.<br \/>\nAnd next time, you might be the terrifying new rider in someone else\u2019s story.
