The GC race might already be over… Can Jonas Vingegaard make up 1:13 on Tadej Poga\u010dar in the next two weeks? It\u2019s possible, of course. A crash, a bad day, a bad decision \u2013 there are dozens of ways to lose a lead, even for the world and three-time Tour de France champion. But the UAE Team Emirates\u2013XRG leader rarely has a bad day, rarely crashes, and almost never makes a bad decision. A more interesting question would be, is anything wrong with Vingegaard?<\/strong>
\nIt’s a valid question because no one has so far put forward a credible explanation for the Visma\u2013Lease a Bike leader\u2019s disastrous time trial on Wednesday\u2019s stage\u202f5. On a 33\u202fkm course in and around Caen, Vingegaard finished 13th, a whopping 1:21 behind the expected winner, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick\u2011Step), and 1:05 behind Poga\u010dar, who rode a flawless time trial and finished second behind the world and Olympic ITT champion.<\/p>\n

As a result, Evenepoel is now third in the GC, 43 seconds behind the former and new race leader, Mathieu van der\u202fPoel (Alpecin\u2011Deceuninck), and 42 seconds down on Poga\u010dar. And Vingegaard has dropped to fourth, 1:14 adrift. He now sits behind the surprising K\u00e9vin Vauquelin (Ark\u00e9a\u2013B&B Hotels), who rode the time trial of his young life to finish fifth and is now 1:00 behind van der\u202fPoel.<\/p>\n

Vingegaard did have an explanation for his setback: \u201cIt was a difficult day for me. That\u2019s how it is sometimes. I didn\u2019t have the legs,\u201d he told Danish TV. \u201cThere\u2019s not much more to say. The Tour is of course long, so I\u2019m still motivated and believe it\u2019s still possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was something specific to the time trial,\u201d sports director Arthur van Dongen said Thursday. \u201cBut we’re going to keep the information internally in the team.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the first ITT of last year\u2019s Tour (stage\u202f7, 25\u202fkm), the Dane lost only 25 seconds to Poga\u010dar but trailed him by 1:15 after the stage. He lost that Tour to Poga\u010dar by 6:17. But Vingegaard came into that race still recovering from his massive crash in the Itzulia Basque Country. The assumption was he was in much better form this year. Let\u2019s hope this was indeed just a bad day and that he recovers his mojo soon and makes a race of it.<\/p>\n

Ride of the week<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The ride of the week was undoubtedly Ben Healy\u2019s 42.3\u202fkm solo attack on Thursday\u2019s stage\u202f6, which netted him his first Tour de France stage victory and moved him from 33rd to 8th in the GC standings, only 2:01 behind van der\u202fPoel (Alpecin\u2011Deceuninck). So strong was his attack that he crossed the line 2:44 ahead of Quinn Simmons (Lidl\u2011Trek), with Michael Storer (Tudor Pro) finishing 7 seconds later in third. Those are winning gaps that van der\u202fPoel and Poga\u010dar would be proud of.<\/p>\n

Philipsen’s crash leaves \u0160koda Green Jersey for Merlier, Milan (and van der\u202fPoel?)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Jasper Philipsen, a former \u0160koda Green Jersey winner and favorite again this year, crashed in a bizarre incident while racing for points at an intermediate sprint on Monday\u2019s stage\u202f3. He broke his collarbone and had to abandon. The Alpecin\u2011Deceuninck sprinter was knocked off after Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Edward Theuns (Lidl\u2011Trek) collided, and Coquard ricocheted into Philipsen.<\/p>\n

Both Coquard and Theuns received yellow cards and 500\u202fCHF fines, though they didn\u2019t appear at fault, just unlucky. This shakes up the green jersey competition, which Philipsen was leading. Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick\u2011Step) won Monday\u2019s bunch sprint over Jonathan Milan (Lidl\u2011Trek), who briefly took the points lead.<\/p>\n

However, the jersey now belongs to Poga\u010dar (who also holds yellow and polka-dot), with 97 points, Milan at 92, and last year\u2019s green jersey winner, Biniam Girmay (Intermarch\u00e9-Wanty), third with 87. It\u2019s early, but time to wonder what Alpecin\u2011Deceuninck will do without Philipsen. They do have another excellent sprinter\u2014Kaden Groves\u2014who has seven Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a stage wins, two Giro d\u2019Italia stage wins, and two Vuelta points classifications. Groves, riding his first Tour, was Philipsen\u2019s main lead-out and currently has only 27 points\u2014likely a long shot compared to Milan, Girmay, or Merlier. Van der\u202fPoel is fourth with 80 and is surely eying a green finish. He\u2019s not the fastest pure sprinter, but fast enough with Groves lead\u2011out to crack a top-five in bunch sprints. Plenty of punchy stages\u2014like Friday\u2019s stage\u202f7\u2014and flat ones ahead in stages\u202f8 and\u202f9 will tell us more after the weekend.<\/p>\n
