Just her, her husband Kyle, and a car packed with snacks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Riding over 6,300 kilometres in 30 days is a massive physical feat. But what does it actually take to get ready for a challenge like that?<\/p>\n<p>For Amy, it\u2019s been about more than just putting in the miles. It&#8217;s about building resilience, staying organized, and keeping things simple.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Training for long days in the saddle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Amy\u2019s training isn\u2019t complicated, but it\u2019s consistent and relentless.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve been doing back-to-back long rides each weekend and lots of hilly rides,&#8221; she says. &#8220;And then intervals as well in the middle to get those sessions in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s been working with her coach, Matt Waterfield, who\u2019s helped her structure her efforts. &#8220;It\u2019s just me and him. And obviously my husband, Kyle, supporting me,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Matt gives me a training plan, and I just follow it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Amy\u2019s training also included trips to Spain and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2023\/01\/31\/a-winter-escape-to-mallorca-what-its-like-to-move-to-the-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mallorca<\/a> in the spring, where she racked up solo miles in good weather, a test of both endurance and mental toughness. &#8220;I was there on my own,&#8221; she says. &#8220;That was a good test, because I didn\u2019t have Kyle on the road to support me. It was doable, but really hard to fit it all in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Getting heat ready<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One major concern is the heat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letour.fr\/en\/\">The Tour de France<\/a> is infamous for sweltering days in the mountains and long hours under the sun, conditions that Amy doesn\u2019t experience much at home.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Heat is one of the things I\u2019m worried about because it\u2019s quite cold where I live,&#8221; she admits. &#8220;So, for the next four weeks, twice a week, I\u2019ve got to go in a hot bath and have a hot drink. I\u2019m happy with that, &#8221; she laughs.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s to help adapt to an increased core body temperature. I\u2019m going to try that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fuelling the effort<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Nutrition is another key piece of the puzzle and Amy has her approach dialled in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve always been a person that likes to eat solid food rather than gels and carb mix,&#8221; she says. &#8220;But because of the amount I\u2019m going to be doing every day, I\u2019ve had to start using carb mix too, there\u2019s just no way to eat enough otherwise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Over time, she\u2019s trained her body to handle food on the bike. &#8220;Every hour, I eat something. It took a while to get used to, but now my body expects it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her go-to ride foods are simple: dates, bananas, peanut butter pittas, homemade energy bars, and flapjacks. &#8220;I like to take little salty potatoes too. She describes the recipe like a seasoned home cook: no exact measurements, just ingredients and feel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s oats, peanut butter, different nuts, cocoa powder, mashed banana, sultanas \u2014 sometimes grated carrot or courgette to get some nutrients in \u2014 and cinnamon or mixed spice,&#8221; she explains. &#8220;You just mix it into a thick batter, bake it, and slice it up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Simple, nutritious, and crucial for the hours she\u2019ll spend in the saddle.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Building mental resilience<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ultra-distance cycling challenges like this are arguably more about mental resilience than physical fitness. Amy\u2019s mental strategies have been shaped by her past struggles with mental health, and she\u2019s bringing those lessons with her into this challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My mantra is \u2018I can and I will,\u2019&#8221; she says. &#8220;When I\u2019m going up a hard hill, I just say to each pedal stroke, \u2018I can, I will.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She also talks to herself, positively and firmly. &#8220;Even if I feel like I\u2019m going too slow, I\u2019ll get to the top of a climb and say, \u2018Well done, Amy. You\u2019re doing really well. Keep going.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For the hard moments, and she knows there will be many, she has a few mental tools ready:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Singing to herself to distract from the pain.<\/li>\n<li>Thinking about the end, the feeling of reaching Paris.<\/li>\n<li>Food rewards, promising herself a pizza or a hot chocolate after a tough day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But most of all, she keeps her bigger reasons close.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s people out there with real problems,&#8221; she says. &#8220;I chose to do this. Pain is a privilege.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And when it gets really hard, she reminds herself: &#8220;Nothing\u2019s ever as hard as what I went through mentally before. I\u2019d rather go through saddle sores 10 times over than that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About Amy Hudson<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Amy Hudson is a British endurance cyclist and mental health advocate who fell in love with cycling just four years ago.
