The gravel world is experiencing a shake-up. A new rule introduced for the 2025 Life Time Grand Prix series is set to change how elite riders approach racing, especially at high-profile events like UNBOUND Gravel, taking place on May 31 in Emporia, Kansas. The controversial move? Drafting\u2014specifically, drafting behind someone outside your race category\u2014is now off-limits.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This might sound like a small technical detail, but it could have big implications, particularly in the women\u2019s field. Gravel races often feature mass starts, where men, women, pros, and amateurs all hit the course together. That chaotic launch has traditionally allowed faster amateur or male riders to mix in with the elite women\u2019s field, often unintentionally\u2014and sometimes very much intentionally\u2014providing them with aerodynamic benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s what Life Time wants to put a stop to.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s break down what the new rule says, how it will be enforced, and what it might mean for this weekend\u2019s UNBOUND Gravel\u2014the biggest and most-watched event in the gravel calendar.<\/span><\/p>\n

A closer look at the rule<\/b><\/h2>\n

Currently in effect, elite riders in the Life Time Grand Prix cannot draft off anyone outside their race category. That means:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Elite women cannot draft behind elite men or any amateur riders.<\/span> <\/li>\n
  • Elite men also can\u2019t draft off elite women or amateurs.<\/span> <\/li>\n
  • Amateur riders are allowed to draft off other amateurs, regardless of age, gender, or category.<\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    And what exactly is drafting, according to Life Time? It\u2019s being within 15 feet (about two bike lengths) and 3 feet to either side of another rider for more than 15 seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The penalty for breaking the rule is severe: automatic relegation to the bottom of the elite results and LTGP standings for that race. No time penalties, no warnings, just a full demotion. One infraction, and your race is effectively over.<\/span><\/p>\n

    That\u2019s a bold statement. But it\u2019s one Life Time feels is necessary to keep things fair, particularly in a sport that\u2019s starting to deal with real prize money, sponsorships, and long-term contracts.<\/span><\/p>\n

    How will it be enforced?<\/span><\/h2>\n

    The question on everyone\u2019s mind: How do you actually police something like this over 200 miles of open terrain?<\/span><\/p>\n

    Here\u2019s what we know. Life Time says it will use:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Neutral moto marshals<\/span> <\/li>\n
    • Course marshals<\/span> <\/li>\n
    • Staff with access to live video feeds<\/span> <\/li>\n
    • Drone and helicopter footage<\/span> <\/li>\n
    • Other verifiable data sources<\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Interestingly, rider feedback or testimony will <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> be accepted as standalone evidence. So even if you see someone blatantly breaking the rule, your word won\u2019t be enough to trigger a penalty. The jury needs visual or data-based proof.<\/span><\/p>\n

      In places where it\u2019s simply not possible to pass\u2014like tight singletrack, climbs, or early-race congestion\u2014officials say they\u2019ll take that into account. Riders also have 30 minutes from notification of a penalty to lodge an appeal.<\/span><\/p>\n
