There are a few ways to win a monument like Paris-Roubaix. You can bide your time, wait for the sprint, or roll the dice in a late attack. Or, if you\u2019re Pauline Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot, you attack solo from 25 kilometers out, ride yourself into the history books, and become the first Frenchwoman to win the Queen of the Classics.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Making her debut at Paris-Roubaix Femmes this past weekend, Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot<\/a> (Visma-Lease a Bike) delivered a race-winning move that was equal parts gutsy and perfectly timed. After bridging across to Emma Norsgaard (Lidl-Trek), she dropped the Dane decisively on the Camphin-en-P\u00e9v\u00e8le cobbles, rode clear, and never looked back\u2014soloing into the Roubaix velodrome with nearly a minute\u2019s advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Behind her, Letizia Borghesi (EF Education-Oatly) slipped away in the final kilometer to take a surprise second place, while Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) sprinted to third ahead of Marianne Vos.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a masterclass in team tactics and individual brilliance, all the more remarkable given that Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot hadn\u2019t even planned to start.<\/span><\/p>\n

Illness to iconic victory<\/b><\/h2>\n

Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot\u2019s win was never part of the original plan. Battling illness during the week leading up to the race, she\u2019d missed key training sessions and was only cleared to ride the morning of the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure this morning if I should participate,\u201d she <\/span>said after the finish<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWe said, OK, I\u2019ll start, and worst-case scenario, I\u2019ll help Marianne [Vos].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s how the day began: riding in service of her legendary teammate, with no personal ambitions. But when Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot crashed before Mons-en-P\u00e9v\u00e8le and had to chase back, something clicked. “When we came back, I just tried to attack,\u201d she said. \u201cAfter I had a gap, I just went full gas until the end.”<\/span><\/p>\n

With Vos in the group behind\u2014marking moves and stalling any organised chase\u2014Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot was free to ride her own race. And what a ride it was.<\/span><\/p>\n

High-speed drama over the cobbles<\/b><\/h2>\n

As always in Roubaix, the race truly began on the cobblestones. Early breakaway riders Quinty Ton (Liv-AlUla-Jayco) and Aurela Nerlo (Winspace Orange Seal) had built a gap of nearly three minutes heading into sector 17, but it never felt like the peloton was going to give them too much leeway.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lidl-Trek\u2019s Ellen van Dijk took matters into her own hands on sector 16, launching a strong solo bridge effort and setting a punishing tempo that quickly changed the dynamic at the front. Sector by sector, the race exploded: crashes, mechanicals, and splits shredded the field. One of those crashes involved Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot, who went down on the treacherous Auchy-les-Orchies \u00e0 Bers\u00e9e sector and momentarily lost contact.<\/span><\/p>\n

Up front, Van Dijk continued to power ahead solo, but the favorites were stirring. Wiebes and Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) pushed the pace, dragging Vos across and setting up a select lead group. Canyon-SRAM\u2019s Chlo\u00e9 Dygert and a few others joined them, but the group dynamics were tense\u2014no one was fully committing, and plenty of glances over shoulders.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually, things came back together, and for a brief moment, more than 20 riders were in contention, heading into the final 35 kilometers.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s when Norsgaard launched her move.<\/span><\/p>\n
