Connie is a former Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist and speed skater who also won one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal in UCI Road and Track World Championships competitions in the late 1970s and early 1980s.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Connie\u2019s immediate family tree could also be a chapter in cycling history. Her husband is the legendary former professional road cyclist and Olympic medalist Davis Phinney, and her son is Taylor Phinney, a retired professional road racing cyclist who competed between 2009 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, her daughter-in-law is none other than one of our \u0160koda We Love Cycling experts and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2024\/09\/25\/kasia-niewiadoma-takes-on-zurich-world-championship-road-race-insights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift winner,<\/a> Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-controller-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Connie Carpenter-Phinney: &quot;The women were not just a novelty \u2014 they were an afterthought.&quot;\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/22mwgaSAGVMOXz5lU9vzII?si=GUCmAWEATt-81Wy7-qqF2Q&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Besides cycling, a great part of Connie\u2019s life, which she also touches upon with Matt, revolves around the Davis Phinney Foundation, supporting individuals and families through life with Parkinson\u2019s disease. It was founded by her husband in 2004 after Davis was diagnosed at age 40, as a way to fund and advance research that demonstrates the benefits of exercise, speech therapy, and other behavioural elements that are critical to living well with Parkinson&#8217;s. Connie now acts as the foundation\u2019s Board Chair and key personality.<\/p>\n<p>This episode includes many wonderful observations and stories from decades spent in professional cycling, such as how great cycling is for your brain and body in later years when you have time to stop and soak up the scenery, how you go about writing a memoir about a notable life and recognizing the pioneers of women\u2019s sports, how her mother launched fireworks in the backyard when Connie won that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/en\/athletes\/connie-carpenter\">1984 Olympic gold,<\/a> what changes have transpired between Connie\u2019s and Kasia\u2019s careers, and much more.
