Both Jhonatan Narv\u00e1ez (UAE Team Emirates \u2013XRG) and Noemi R\u00fcegg (EF Education\u2013Oatly) won their respective races by being the fastest on the ascent (3.3 km @ 7.3%) to the summit of the iconic little mountain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For two-time Ecuadorian champion Narv\u00e1ez, who finished second in this race last year for INEOS Grenadiers, this was his first victory in a World Tour multi-stage race and a great way to show the leader of his new team, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2024\/10\/16\/opinion-is-pogacar-too-good-for-the-sport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tadej Poga\u010dar,<\/a> that he has another rider he could count on to deliver the goods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt means a lot for me, also for the team,\u201d he said on Sunday, after the final stage. \u201cIt\u2019s my first year [with the team], and a start like this is awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the route of this year\u2019s race was announced, it was clear that it would be won by a rider who could win the penultimate stage atop Willunga Hill and then ride smart enough to stay in the mix on the flat and very fast final stage, which was won by the Australian Red Bull\u2013BORA\u2013hansgrohe sprinter Sam Welsford, his third victory of the race and his sixth in two years. Talk about horses for courses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy boys are so good,\u201d Welsford said of his team, which included lead-out great Danny van Poppel. \u201cToday, [they] took control. In the end, just amazing. We came here with big goals and ticked them off pretty well. I think to win three stages and third on GC is something to be proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narv\u00e1ez went into the decisive fifth stage trailing the <a href=\"https:\/\/movistarteam.com\/\">Movistar<\/a> rider Javier Romo by four seconds. Romo was the first to attack on the second, and final, ascent of Willunga Hill, with the recently triple-crowned Australian champion Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla) leading the chase. Five riders went into the final sprint, with the Ecuadorian proving the fastest. Oscal Onley (Picnic PostNL) finished second, just ahead of Finn Fischer-Black (Red Bull\u2013BORA\u2013Hansgrohe). Plapp finished 3 seconds off the podium, fending off Romo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final stage was marked by a mass crash on a turn leading into the bunch sprint. But Narv\u00e1ez was well ahead of the incident and finished coolly to take a well-deserved victory. \u201cThree crashes in the last 3 [kilometres],\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy when 150 guys are trying to go into one corner at 70 kph. It\u2019s dangerous, but it\u2019s cycling and we saved the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narv\u00e1ez finished the race 9 seconds ahead of Romo, with the former UAE rider Fischer-Black finishing third, at 12 seconds, for his new team.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the women\u2019s race, which finished on January 19, Noemi R\u00fcegg dominated the Willunga Hill ascent at the end of stage 2, with a crushing solo ride. She began her attack with about 2.5 km left to climb when she chased down two of the prerace favourites, Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl-Trek) and Neve Bradbury (Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto), as well as Silke Smulders (Liv AlUla Jayco).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197743\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-197743\" style=\"width: 990px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2025\/01\/Noemi-Ruegg-profimedia-0954806615.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-197743 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2025\/01\/Noemi-Ruegg-profimedia-0954806615.webp\" alt=\"Noemi R\u00fcegg\" width=\"990\" height=\"660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2025\/01\/Noemi-Ruegg-profimedia-0954806615.webp 990w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2025\/01\/Noemi-Ruegg-profimedia-0954806615-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2025\/01\/Noemi-Ruegg-profimedia-0954806615-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2025\/01\/Noemi-Ruegg-profimedia-0954806615-400x267.webp 400w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2025\/01\/Noemi-Ruegg-profimedia-0954806615-272x182.webp 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 990px) 100vw, 990px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-197743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">R\u00fcegg&#8217;s win was a surprise of the race. \u00a9 Profimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Smulders attacked in the final kilometre, only R\u00fcegg was able to follow. She described what happened next as if it had been an accident. \u201cWe were the only two left, and [Smulders] attacked,\u201d R\u00fcegg said after the stage. \u201cI followed her, and then I just went by myself. And I thought first, \u2018Oh [expletive], this was too early. I cannot keep going like this.\u2019 But then I looked back, and I had the gap, so I had no other choice. I had to just keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She won the stage by 10 seconds over Smulders, with a group of four riders, led by \u00a0Mie Bj\u00f8rndal Ottestad (Uno-X Mobility), finishing 26 seconds down. That was the 23-year-old Swiss rider\u2019s first-ever World Tour stage win. On the third and final stage, she defended her lead valiantly against what seemed like an endless series of attacks to take the first World Tour stage race win of her young career.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riding on her own, R\u00fcegg faced one challenge after another in the final 30 km of the 105.9 km stage in and around Stirling and was forced to chase riders down repeatedly to protect her lead.
