And it\u2019s not just about smoking. Let\u2019s take a look at what other behaviours are impactful and how you can improve.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Smoking, overweight, and inactivity are responsible for 40% of all cancer deaths<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29160902\/\">A new study<\/a> led by researchers at the American Cancer Society finds 4 in 10 cancer cases and close to 50% of all cancer deaths in adults under 30 years old could be attributed to modifiable risk factors. That means smoking, excess body weight, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, poor diet, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and infections such as hepatitis or HIV. Cigarette smoking was by far the leading risk factor, contributing to nearly 20% of all cancer cases and 30% of all cancer deaths. It was followed by excess body weight contributing to 7,6% cases, alcohol consumption to 5,4%, UV radiation exposure to 4,6%, and physical inactivity to 3,1%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDespite considerable declines in smoking prevalence during the past few decades, the number of lung cancer deaths attributable to cigarette smoking in the United States is alarming. This finding underscores the importance of implementing policies to promote smoking cessation. Interventions to help maintain healthy body weight and diet can also substantially reduce the number of cancer cases and deaths in the country,\u201d commented the study\u2019s lead author Dr Farhad Islami.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What can you do about it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The better question may be what you should not do. Based on what this and other studies found, it may be just as important to avoid certain unhealthy behaviours as it is to engage in healthful ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start with a list of things to avoid:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<li>Overeating<\/li>\n<li>Drinking alcohol to excess<\/li>\n<li>Excessive unprotected sun exposure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these things make it hard for your body to repair itself, which increases your disease risk. If you can manage all four of these points, you\u2019re doing a lot for your health and longevity. And then there are the proactive things you can do to further reduce your chances of developing disease and dying prematurely.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_186876\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-186876\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/Alcohol-glasses-pixabay-919071_1280.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-186876\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/Alcohol-glasses-pixabay-919071_1280.webp\" alt=\"Alcohol\" width=\"1280\" height=\"850\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/Alcohol-glasses-pixabay-919071_1280.webp 1280w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/Alcohol-glasses-pixabay-919071_1280-300x199.webp 300w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/Alcohol-glasses-pixabay-919071_1280-1024x680.webp 1024w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/Alcohol-glasses-pixabay-919071_1280-768x510.webp 768w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/Alcohol-glasses-pixabay-919071_1280-272x182.webp 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-186876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Avoid drinking alcohol to excess.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a list of things to do:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Improve your diet<\/strong> by adding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2020\/12\/22\/5-diet-tips-that-work-for-everyone-fruits-and-veggies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fruits, vegetables,<\/a> and sources of fibre while limiting the amount of processed meat and junk food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exercise<\/strong> at least 150 minutes a week at moderate intensity, and do some form of strength training 2x per week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sleep<\/strong> close to 8 hours every night.<\/p>\n<p>Use <strong>sun protection<\/strong> when exposed for long periods of time.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Only around 6% of people do it right<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s likely that none of the above-listed behaviours are new to you. And they may all seem like pretty basic, easy things to do. What may be surprising to you is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2016\/16_0054.htm\">research shows<\/a> that only 6,3% of people do all of the basic lifestyle behaviours right! So, if you are able to do that, you\u2019re in a pretty exclusive club.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a cyclist, it\u2019s likely that you are meeting or exceeding the exercise guidelines. And with regular exercise, it\u2019s much easier to maintain a healthy weight too. It\u2019s typically the regular 8 hours of sleep and protection against UV rays that cyclists struggle with.
