In comments to journalists after Sunday\u2019s ninth stage, the UAE Team Emirates leader said the French race was already \u201cin the back of my mind,\u201d and then spoke about the rider who beat him in the last two Tours and is currently recovering from a horrific crash, Jonas Vingegaard,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was really happy to see him on the bike and that he shared some news on [social] media,\u201d Poga\u010dar said. \u201cI&#8217;m looking forward to seeing him at the Tour. I think he&#8217;s going to be there, and I think he&#8217;s going to be in good shape. I wish him the best recovery and that he can push on the pedals faster and go [training] at altitude. I think we will see him at the Tour in really good shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All cycling fans hope that he\u2019s right and that the 27-year-old Dane will be at his best when the Tour kicks off on June 29. The people who should know Vingegaard\u2019s current condition and how well he is recovering from the broken collarbone, fractured ribs, and punctured lung he suffered on April 4 in the Itzulia Basque Country, his coach and his boss at Visma\u2013Lease a Bike, are cautiously optimistic \u2013 with the emphasis on cautiously.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJonas is currently doing light endurance training,\u201d his coach, Tim Heemskerk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bt.dk\/cykling\/efter-uger-med-mystik-traener-afsloerer-detaljer-om-vingegaards-comeback\">told BT<\/a>. \u201cWe have to realise that he lost his form because of his hospitalisation, which meant that he did almost nothing for three weeks\u2026 However, we also know that he will respond quickly to his training. But that doesn\u2019t mean that I know whether he will be ready in time for the Tour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heemskerk went on to say that Vingegaard was riding at a modest pace of about 35 kph and was lengthening his time on the road every day, if he felt no discomfort.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe has a physiotherapist in Denmark, and he has a nutritionist who has started working with him,\u201d Heemskerk said. \u201cSo we are doing everything we can every single day. Without pushing too hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visma\u2013Lease a Bike Managing Director Richard Plugge was more cautious. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.relevo.com\/ciclismo\/tour-francia\/richard-plugge-vingegaard-tour-20240512143435-nt.html\">told Relevo<\/a> that Vingegaard would not defend his Tour title \u201cif he\u2019s not 100%. That is something we are not going to go through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He went on to say: \u201cAfter a fall like the one he suffered, we have to be cautious and go day by day with his recovery. Right now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.relevo.com\/ciclismo\/jonas-vingegaard-vuelve-entrenar-mira-20240507132606-nt.html\">he just got on the bike<\/a>. We have to wait a couple of days to see where he really is physically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has been a terrible year for Visma, with the injuries to Vingegaard and to the team\u2019s other superstar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2024\/02\/26\/wout-van-aert-on-winning-kuurne-brussel-kuurne-i-was-very-confident-to-round-it-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wout van Aert,<\/a> who crashed a week before his teammate did and suffered less serious injuries. Before his crash, van Aert had planned to ride in the Giro. We haven&#8217;t sat down with him yet to talk about his schedule after the fall. We have to see if he sees himself in the Tour de France or not, and analyse all possible scenarios before deciding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Visma\u2019s run of bad luck continued in the Giro with their sprinter Olav Kooij, who had won stage 9, and their 21-year-old GC rider Cian Uijtdebroeks both dropping out of the race due to illness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is another superstar who crashed in the Itzulia Basque Country, and on the same curve as Vingegaard, who cycling fans are very eager to see ride against Poga\u010dar in the Tour de France \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2024\/04\/05\/terrifying-crash-injures-vingegaard-evenepoel-roglic-and-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Remco Evenepoel.<\/a> According to his boss at Soudal \u2013 Quick Step, Patrick Lefevere, his star rider\u2019s recovery is progressing so well that he should be ready to ride a prep race at the Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9, which starts on June 2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNot that we ever really doubted it but Remco Evenepoel will be ready for the Tour,\u201d Lefevere said in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nieuwsblad.be\/cnt\/dmf20240510_96688164\">Het Nieuwsblad<\/a> column. \u201cDuring his fall in the Tour of the Basque Country, he broke his collarbone and his shoulder blade. The latter currently causes stiffness in the time trial position but that is a matter of days [before it is healed].\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outspoken Soudal boss was optimistic that Evenepoel would be at his best even before the Tour. \u201cThere will be an individual time trial of 34 kilometres in the Dauphin\u00e9 on June 5,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is no reason to think that Remco could not reach his best level there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth member of the Big Four who was scheduled to compete at this year\u2019s Tour for the first time, Primo\u017e Rogli\u010d (BORA-hansgrohe), also crashed at the Itzulia but managed to limp away and has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/his-training-is-producing-really-good-numbers-roglic-recovered-from-itzulia-injuries-builds-toward-tour-de-france\/\">training well<\/a>.
