{"id":194150,"date":"2023-10-23T08:13:12","date_gmt":"2023-10-23T08:13:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/?p=194150"},"modified":"2023-10-23T08:13:12","modified_gmt":"2023-10-23T08:13:12","slug":"kasia-niewiadoma-after-big-sugar-gravel-victory-gravel-is-insanely-hard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2023\/10\/23\/kasia-niewiadoma-after-big-sugar-gravel-victory-gravel-is-insanely-hard\/","title":{"rendered":"Kasia Niewiadoma After Big Sugar Gravel Victory: \u201cGravel Is Insanely Hard\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"-wm-MsoNormal\"><strong>Freshly crowned gravel world champion, Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM), rode her rainbow kit to victory at her second-ever gravel race on Saturday, 21 October, at Big Sugar Gravel in Bentonville, Arkansas, USA.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Big Sugar Gravel offers two signature races: the marquee 100-mile course (which was actually 104 miles) through the Ozarks with approximately 7,000 feet of elevation gain, and a fast and scenic 50-mile course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"-wm-MsoNormal\">While Niewiadoma showcased a solo masterclass to the finish line, the men&#8217;s event concluded with a tight sprint, with the victory going to Norway&#8217;s Torbj\u00f8rn Andre R\u00f8ed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"-wm-MsoNormal\">The coveted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigsugarclassic.com\/\">Life Time Grand Prix series<\/a> was clinched by U.S. gravel champion Keegan Swenson and the indomitable Sofia Gomez Villafa\u00f1e, each pocketing a prize of $25,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"-wm-MsoNormal\">Sofia Gomez Villafa\u00f1e, an off-road maestro, initiated the race with an assertive early move. Yet, she wasn&#8217;t alone\u2014Niewiadoma was right behind her. She finished a staggering nine minutes ahead of the second-placed Lauren De Crescenzo, followed by Anna Hicks, who secured the third position<\/p>\n<p class=\"-wm-MsoNormal\">\u201cI feel like hearing about gravel beforehand I was like &#8216;oh, sweet we\u2019ll just ride for long and then relax and have fun&#8217; but it\u2019s insanely hard, and I feel like every single roadie should know that because I know at some points we were like oh, gravel is for people who don\u2019t want want to really race but it might be the opposite,\u201d Niewiadoma commented after the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"-wm-MsoNormal\">While the racing is different from what she&#8217;s used to on the WorldTour circuit, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2022\/07\/12\/inside-tour-de-france-team-cars-with-canyon-sram-racings-ronny-lauke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canyon-SRAM<\/a> rider said, &#8220;The girls were very strong out there for sure.\u201d She also mentioned, \u201cTo be honest, the last five kilometers I was like \u2018never again.\u2019 It\u2019s super hard but I feel like
