The questions concern the team\u2019s strategy of having two Grand Tour winners as co-leaders in the race (Who is the primary leader? When will that be decided?) and especially Rogli\u010d\u2019s future with the team.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team questions first arose after a <a href=\"https:\/\/escapecollective.com\/lidl-trek-is-trying-to-sign-primoz-roglic\/\">story in the Escape Collective<\/a> that began, \u201cIf Primo\u017e Rogli\u010d\u00a0 wants another run at the Tour de France, he surely can\u2019t stay at Jumbo-Visma,\u201d and then went on to say that there were ongoing talks between the 33-year-old Slovenian and Lidl-Trek. That team has seen its budget increase exponentially and has been on a rider shopping spree, bringing in former Giro winner Tao Geoghegan Hart and this year\u2019s surprise Giro points classification winner Jonathan Milan, among others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without confirming that there had been contact between the two sides, Lidl-Trek manager Luca Guarcilena was naturally enthusiastic about having the three-time Vuelta champion and this year\u2019s Giro winner on his side. &#8220;A rider with his palmar\u00e9s and racing craft would really align with the vision we have for the team,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclinguptodate.com\/cycling\/move-to-lidl-trek-not-impossible-for-primoz-roglic-its-clear-someone-like-him-can-elevate-a-team\">he said<\/a>. \u201cWe have a lot of young riders with a ton of potential and we also have great momentum going right now, so it\u2019s clear someone like him can elevate a team.\u201d However, he added, \u201cThis is all hypothetical, as we know Primo\u017e has a contract for next year with Jumbo.\u201d In fact, Rogli\u010d\u2019s contract runs to the end of 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jumbo-Visma head Ruchard Plugge was quick to put a damper on the possibility of Rogli\u010d leaving. \u201cLet Primo\u017e go? That would be very bad, he is our king,&#8221; he told Het Nieuwsblad, &#8220;I think it&#8217;s a nonsense story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the fact remains that \u201cKing\u201d Rogli\u010d is still very keen on winning the Tour, having been denied in 2020, when he faltered in the ITT on the penultimate stage and was overtaken by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2023\/08\/30\/power-numbers-in-grand-tours-vingegaard-and-pogacar-breaking-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tadej Poga\u010dar,<\/a> and again in 2021, when a stage-3 crash forced him to abandon 6 stages later, and in 2022, when another crash forced him to abandon again later in the race \u2013 but not before he helped Vingegaard outfox Poga\u010dar\u00a0to win his first Tour yellow jersey. And it is also self-evident that as long as Vingegaard remains with the team and stays fit, he will be leader in the Tour, no matter what Plugge maintains.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_193837\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-193837\" style=\"width: 1250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2023\/09\/Primoz-Roglic-profimedia-0800788685.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-193837\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2023\/09\/Primoz-Roglic-profimedia-0800788685.webp\" alt=\"Primo\u017e Rogli\u010d\" width=\"1250\" height=\"834\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2023\/09\/Primoz-Roglic-profimedia-0800788685.webp 1250w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2023\/09\/Primoz-Roglic-profimedia-0800788685-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2023\/09\/Primoz-Roglic-profimedia-0800788685-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2023\/09\/Primoz-Roglic-profimedia-0800788685-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2023\/09\/Primoz-Roglic-profimedia-0800788685-400x267.webp 400w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2023\/09\/Primoz-Roglic-profimedia-0800788685-272x182.webp 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1250px) 100vw, 1250px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-193837\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rogli\u010d at the 2023 La Vuelta. \u00a9 Profimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Once we know the 2024 [Tour de France] course, we will see from the team what our chance is of winning,\u201d he told Het Nieuwsblad<em>.<\/em> \u201cThat can be with two, if necessary three leaders.\u201d That is hard to believe, given Vingegaard\u2019s performance in winning this year\u2019s Tour by an incredible 7:29 over Poga\u010dar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you can\u2019t blame the Jumbo-Visma chief for doing whatever he can to keep from losing Rogli\u010d, who has been one of the best riders of this century and is having another wonderful year, as one of his Vuelta rivals pointed out. \u201cNow look at Primo\u017e,\u201d Remco Evenepoel told journalists before the start of the Vuelta. \u201cHe has won every race he started this year. With the exception of the Vuelta a Burgos, these were all World Tour races. When you talk about regularity, you should always say Rogli\u010d.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Including individual stages, the Slovenian has recorded 77 wins in his career, including the 4 Grand Tours and 9 other major stage races, such as Paris-Nice (2022), Tirreno-Adriatico twice (2019 and this year), the Tour de Romandie twice (2018, 2019) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crit%C3%A9rium_du_Dauphin%C3%A9\">Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9<\/a> (2022). He has also won 8 single-day races, including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Li%C3%A8ge%E2%80%93Bastogne%E2%80%93Li%C3%A8ge\">Li\u00e8ge\u2013Bastogne\u2013Li\u00e8ge<\/a> (2020) and Milano-Torino (2021). He has all the skills needed to be a dominant GC rider, as he is one of the best time trialers and one of the top climbers in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rogli\u010d\u2019s main problem has been his bike handling, as he seems to crash considerably more often than his main Grand Tour rivals. He has already crashed on this year\u2019s Vuelta, when he and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) went down after a UAE Team Emirates rider hit the pavement in front of them. It remains to be seen if the effects of that crash and the minor injuries he suffered will hamper his ability to compete and therefore make Vingegaard the de facto team leader in the race. Just as we can only speculate if Rogli\u010d will honor his contract with Jumbo-Visma and stay with the team until the end of 2025, or if he will jump ship to try and win the Tour de France with another team before it is too late.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After announcing earlier this year, following his dramatic Giro victory, that he would skip the Tour de France and ride in the Vuelta, Rogli\u010d was asked\u00a0if he would consider changing teams to get a better shot at winning the race. \u201cThe main thing for me is to achieve the goals that I still lack,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/primoz-roglic-confirms-no-tour-de-france-no-worlds-but-maybe-the-vuelta-a-espana\/\">he said<\/a>. \u201cSo far I have been getting all the support I wanted. So I don&#8217;t see any problems going forward.
