{"id":192134,"date":"2023-02-27T14:55:58","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T14:55:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/?p=192134"},"modified":"2023-02-27T14:59:53","modified_gmt":"2023-02-27T14:59:53","slug":"evenepoel-wins-uae-tour-but-without-a-stage-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2023\/02\/27\/evenepoel-wins-uae-tour-but-without-a-stage-victory\/","title":{"rendered":"Evenepoel Wins UAE Tour \u2013 But Without a Stage Victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Maybe last year\u2019s UCI Road Race World Champion and Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a\u00a0winner, Remco Evenepoel, wanted to send a quiet message, one that made a statement without shouting \u2013 to distinguish himself from Tadej Poga\u010dar, who last week won three of the five stages of the Vuelta a Andaluc\u00eda.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the reason, the 23-year-old Soudal Quick-Step rider easily won the UAE Tour without winning a single stage. You might recall that Evenepoel sent a message to Poga\u010dar\u2019s Instagram page that read &#8220;Stop winning, thank you,&#8221; in a tongue-in-cheek comment on the Slovenian\u2019s apparently insatiable hunger for victories. The two young champions are obviously very aware of each other, though it is unclear when racing fans will see them race against each other in a Grand Tour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poga\u010dar certainly seems eager to face his rival. Last year, after the world championship time trial, the UAE Team Emirates leader even sent a challenge to his Belgian rival via the media. \u201cIf you win the Vuelta, you have to come to the Tour. That is a logical next step,\u201d Poga\u010dar told Evenepoel via journalists. \u201cIf everyone rides the Tour next year, it will be very interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Evenepoel is not riding in this year\u2019s Tour. He has chosen the Giro d\u2019Italia instead. For a while, it appeared that they would meet in the UAE Tour, which is Poga\u010dar\u2019s team\u2019s home race, but the Slovenian decided to race in Andalusia instead. And his Belgian rival is apparently not about to let anyone dictate his strategy or his program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He took the lead in the UAE Tour after stage three, by finishing second on the punishing climb to the finish at Jebel Jais, 14 seconds behind Movistar\u2019s Einer Augusto Rubio. And he sealed the victory with another second place in the seventh, and final, stage, another summit finish, coming in 10 seconds behind Poga\u010dar\u2019s teammate Adam Yates.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-controller-wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">King of the mountain! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AdamYates7?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AdamYates7<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AbuDhabiSC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AbuDhabiSC<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1xFxzPiIP0\">pic.twitter.com\/1xFxzPiIP0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; UAE Tour Official (@uae_tour) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/uae_tour\/status\/1629836115862597632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 26, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async data-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All in all, it looked like a comfortable GC win for Evenepoel, who finished 59 seconds ahead of Australian Luke Plapp (INEOS Grenadiers) and 1 minute ahead of Yates. However, on the final climb of the race, 10.7km at an average slope of 6.8%, Yates shook him off quite easily, as Evenepoel appeared to suffer in the 40\u00b0 Centigrade (104\u00b0 Fahrenheit) heat, and only made up ground when the gradient flattened out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the stage, Evenepoel slumped to the ground and did not look like someone who had just won a race. \u201cIt\u00a0was hard out there,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theuaetour.com\/evenepoel-wins-the-2023-uae-tour-as-yates-triumphs-on-the-final-stage\/\">he admitted<\/a>. \u201cI thought Yates was going to stay on my wheel and then jump in the last few hundred meters, and I would have been happy with that. But in the end I had to go over the limit to keep up with him.\u201d Nevertheless, he was delighted to record his first race victory as the world road race champion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And speaking of statements, last year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2022\/07\/24\/jonas-vingegaard-wins-the-2022-tour-de-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard<\/a> wanted to remind people that there are other champion riders on the circuit than Poga\u010dar and Evenepoel. And his statement was as loud as anyone\u2019s. After the first stage of the four-stage O Gran Cami\u00f1o was canceled due to snow, the Danish Jumbo-Visma rider won all three remaining stages, two in the mountains and an individual time trial. His margin of victory in the GC was 53 seconds over Movistar\u2019s Ruben Guerreiro and 1min 25sec over Jesus Herrada of Cofidis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was Poga\u010dar
