For example, they enable you to climb hills you may not be strong enough to ascend on pedal power alone. E-bikes also enable you to keep up with cyclists who are faster and fitter than you are, which makes them ideal options for family rides, where strengths may differ among the riders. Riding an e-bike with the motor running also enables you to talk with fellow e-bike riders, making for a pleasant social outing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But did you know that e-bikes are also perfectly suited for providing an excellent workout, one that can be an important part of your fitness plan? According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/acsm-tj\/Fulltext\/2021\/04150\/Metabolic_and_Cardiovascular_Responses_to_a.5.aspx?context=LatestArticles\">recent study<\/a>, which used cyclists new to electric bikes, riders commuting on e-bikes rode faster and with less effort while also increasing their respiration and heart rates enough to get significant fitness benefits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the authors of the study put it, \u201cHR [heart rate] and caloric expenditure were both increased significantly above resting levels while riding an e-bike. Although these values were lower than the relative heart and metabolic rate of a regular bicycle, the responses during a simulated 3-mile commute on an e-bike reached \u201cmoderate intensity\u201d based on %V\u0307O2max\u00a0and MET values&#8230; [T]his suggests that e-bike commuting could be part of one\u2019s strategy for accruing the recommended amount of PA [physical activity] for health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is true that the direct effects of riding an e-bike are less beneficial than those provided by riding a standard road bike, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S259019821930017X\">another study<\/a> found that e-bike riders tend to ride greater distances than road bike riders, which mitigated much of that difference. \u201cPhysical activity levels, measured in Metabolic Equivalent Task minutes per week (MET min\/wk), were similar among e-bikers and cyclists (4,463 vs. 4,085),\u201d the authors of this study found.\u00a0 They concluded that \u201cphysical activity from travel-related activities is similar for e-bikers and cyclists&#8230; Moreover, overall physical activity among both groups was also comparable.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_180577\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-180577\" style=\"width: 1250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2020\/11\/E-bike-profimedia-0558344112.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-180577 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2020\/11\/E-bike-profimedia-0558344112.webp\" alt=\"E-bicycle\" width=\"1250\" height=\"780\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2020\/11\/E-bike-profimedia-0558344112.webp 1250w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2020\/11\/E-bike-profimedia-0558344112-300x187.webp 300w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2020\/11\/E-bike-profimedia-0558344112-1024x639.webp 1024w, https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2020\/11\/E-bike-profimedia-0558344112-768x479.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1250px) 100vw, 1250px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-180577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">E-bikes are also perfectly suited for providing an excellent workout. \u00a9 Profimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put these findings to the test, <em>Bike Radar<\/em> had cycling coach and elite MTB rider Tom Bell ride an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2022\/04\/12\/e-bikes-open-up-new-opportunities-for-open-terrain-riding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electric mountain bike<\/a> to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/electric-bike-fitness\/#:~:text=Ultimately%2C%20the%20study%20concluded%20that,engage%20in%20this%20fitness%20activity%E2%80%9D.\">how much of a workout<\/a> it provided. They measured his heart rate at 198bpm, not quite up to his personal maximum of 208bpm, but certainly close enough to be significant. And Bell himself confirmed many of the benefits cited in these studies. \u201cElectric bikes can help you stay out longer on the bike,\u201d he said. \u201cEven if the average intensity may be lower, there is a big correlation between ride\/training duration and fitness improvement, and a lot of aerobic benefits come from increasing ride duration, not just intensity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, as with road bikes, you control the amount of exercise you get on an e-bike. For example, you can vary the time your ride out of turbo mode. That will have you riding a bicycle that is significantly heavier than your road bike, which ups the resistance and therefore raises your heart rate and increases endurance and power.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to get serious with your e-bike workout, use a heart rate monitor. This will help you track your physical improvement and ensure that you don\u2019t overtax yourself. It will also provide a numerical framework \u2013 beats per minute (bpm) \u2013 for your workouts. If you are going to use the monitor, you should talk to a trainer about how to get the most out of it and what the best max heart rate is for what you want to accomplish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, if you\u2019re e-bike training, don\u2019t avoid hills. Find a nearby hill that suits your fitness, one that is neither too easy nor the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/ride-tested\/alpe-dhuez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alpe d\u2019Huez,<\/a> and do repeats of 3 to 5 minutes or one long slog to the top. Or combine both strategies.
