First, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won the Tour de France and now his compatriot, Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) has won the \u0160koda Green Jersey in the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a. If the 25-year-old Vingegaard\u2019s yellow jersey in the Tour was something of an upset \u2013 everyone, including us, expected Tadej Poga\u010dar\u00a0to cruise to victory \u2013 Pedersen was one of the favorites to win green at the Vuelta \u2013 though his margin of victory, by 223 points over the runner-up, Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious), was unexpected.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But it shouldn\u2019t have been. Pedersen, who is only 26, has been one of the leading sprinters in the peloton for several years, and he won the World Championship road race in 2019. But when his only realistic rival, Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), dropped out of the race after stage 9 due to Covid, all Pedersen really had to do was finish the race to win green.<\/p>\n<p>But, of course, he did far more than that. His points total, 409, is by far the highest number of points awarded to a rider in the history of the Vuelta. This was, of course, largely due to the change in the way points are awarded in the Vuelta, which is now like that in the Tour. Still, if this had been the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letour.fr\/en\/\">Tour de France,<\/a> Pedersen\u2019s points total would have been the ninth-highest of all time. The only blemish on his performance was his defeat in the final mass sprint in Madrid by the unheralded Juan Sebastian Molano (UAE Team Emirates), who had never won a Grand Tour stage before.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-controller-wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">First things first after the finish \ud83d\ude05! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LaVuelta22?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LaVuelta22<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CgkOfUHacs\">pic.twitter.com\/CgkOfUHacs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Lidl-Trek (@LidlTrek) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LidlTrek\/status\/1569028840160108545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 11, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async data-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Of course, Pedersen was delighted with the green jersey win and <a href=\"https:\/\/racing.trekbikes.com\/stories\/trek-segafredo-men\/trek-segafredo-celebrates-green-in-madrid\">saluted the work of his team<\/a> after the race. \u201cI am just super, super happy for this Vuelta. To have the green jersey here and three [stage] wins, it\u2019s really special. I am really thankful to the whole team, fighting, and I think we showed that a team with different types of riders can survive for sprints, what I am good at. All our climbers were digging so deep every day to perform in the sprints, and that shows that if everyone has the commitment, and the teamwork is there, we can fight for wins no matter [the] terrain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What makes his performance special is that there were only six truly flat stages in this year\u2019s Vuelta, therefore few chances to pick up points. But Pedersen is a special sprinter, fast in the flats and strong enough in the mountains to stay with the likes of Primo\u017e Rogli\u010d on moderate climbs. I believe that Pedersen would have won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2022\/08\/24\/a-brief-history-of-the-vuelta-a-espana-skoda-green-jersey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u0160koda Green Jersey<\/a> even if Bennett \u2013 who won the first two sprint finishes \u2013 had remained in the race, though his margin of victory would have been smaller. I am guessing that, unless future Vueltas contain a few more stages suitable for mass sprint finishes, it will be a long time before anyone approaches Pedersen\u2019s points total.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This has been a very good year for Danish cycling in Grand Tour racing.
