{"id":189694,"date":"2022-06-06T12:02:54","date_gmt":"2022-06-06T12:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/?p=189694"},"modified":"2022-07-01T11:11:52","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T11:11:52","slug":"is-julian-alaphilippe-on-the-road-to-the-tour-de-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2022\/06\/06\/is-julian-alaphilippe-on-the-road-to-the-tour-de-france\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Julian Alaphilippe on the Road to the Tour de France?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The crash in the Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge one-day race on April 24 that sidelined French double world champion Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) was just as bad as it looked.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After the race, fellow French cyclist Romain Bardet of Team DSM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.velonews.com\/news\/road\/romain-bardet-julian-alaphilippe-couldnt-move-he-couldnt-breathe-following-liege-bastogne-liege-crash\/\">said<\/a>\u00a0that Alaphilippe was the worst affected in the crash, and he was not immediately seen by rescuers because he had fallen into a ditch and slammed against a tree. Bardet who also fell but was not hurt took one look at his compatriot and feared the worst.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just a nightmare,\u201d Bardet said. \u201cWhen I looked around, I saw Julian maybe five or six meters down, and it was an emotional shock because he was in a bad situation. No one was coming and he really needed help. It was an emergency situation. He couldn\u2019t move, he couldn\u2019t breathe.\u201d Bardet alerted rescuers and scrambled down to help his countryman.<\/p>\n<p>The damage Alaphilippe suffered was severe: two broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade and hemopneumothorax, an injury that is a combination of two medical conditions: pneumothorax and hemothorax.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/collapsed-lung\">Pneumothorax<\/a> is better known as a collapsed lung and occurs when there is air outside the lung, in the space between the lung and the chest cavity. Hemothorax is when there is blood in that same space. Hemopneumothorax can be fatal if untreated. To treat it, the blood and air must be drained from the chest using a tube. Surgery is often needed to repair any wounds or injuries.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-controller-wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"fr\" dir=\"ltr\">Retour dans les roues \u23f3 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QfdTJtHOwy\">pic.twitter.com\/QfdTJtHOwy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Julian Alaphilippe Officiel (@alafpolak1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alafpolak1\/status\/1529531991670108163?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 25, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async data-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Alaphilippe\u2019s cousin and coach, Franck Alaphilippe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lequipe.fr\/Cyclisme-sur-piste\/Actualites\/Julian-alaphilippe-a-donne-des-nouvelles-rassurantes-a-ses-proches\/1329841\">told <em>L\u2019Equipe<\/em><\/a> after visiting the cyclist in the hospital that despite the injuries he was in surprisingly good spirits. \u201cHe made a few jokes, the way he usually does, and I was reassured that he had recovered his inner joker.\u201d However, Franck said, his cousin was \u201cdisgusted\u201d that he had slammed into the tree, which caused most of the damage. &#8220;He said, \u2018Another 50 centimetres and I would have missed the tree, and maybe I could even have got back on the bike and resumed the race. I just had to hit the tree.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The crash was the culmination of what has been a difficult year for Alaphilippe, his cousin said. \u201cHe has always had some difficult moments but never a black period like this.\u201d Since the beginning of the year, Alaphilippe has suffered from colds, bronchitis, the flu and he crashed three times in fewer than two months. \u201cBut from what I\u2019ve seen,\u201d Franck Alaphilippe said, \u201cthis experience will make him stronger, give him greater mental strength, he\u2019ll be more determined than before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that seems to be the case. Just one month after the crash, Julian Alaphilippe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.velonews.com\/news\/road\/julian-alaphilippe-on-road-to-recovery-the-option-of-the-tour-de-france-is-still-open\/\">announced<\/a> via a team statement that his lung had \u201ccompletely recovered\u201d but that the broken bones still hurt. However, he said that he had been told that he was \u201cOK to start training.\u201d As a result, he joined his Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl teammates in the team\u2019s training camp in California\u2019s Sierra Nevada mountains.<\/p>\n<p>The charismatic 29-year-old Frenchman went on to say that his health was improving \u201cevery day\u201d and that his injuries had not required any surgical intervention. Astonishingly, he was still hoping to be in Copenhagen for the Grand D\u00e9part of this year\u2019s Tour de France. \u201cI am trying to be an optimist but I know I need to take my time and to see how the training is going,\u201d he said. \u201cIf everything continues as it is, then the option of the Tour de France is still open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It would be an accomplishment if the winner of six individual Tour de France stages, the 2018 mountain classification and the 2019 combativity award were fit enough to be at the start of the Tour on July 1. But if he has recovered just some of his form, it would not be a surprise to see him be a factor in some of the later stages of the race.
