{"id":186954,"date":"2021-10-20T13:06:43","date_gmt":"2021-10-20T13:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/?p=186954"},"modified":"2021-10-20T13:06:43","modified_gmt":"2021-10-20T13:06:43","slug":"red-walters-i-learned-more-in-two-days-alongside-the-world-tour-peloton-than-i-have-in-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2021\/10\/20\/red-walters-i-learned-more-in-two-days-alongside-the-world-tour-peloton-than-i-have-in-two-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Walters: \u2018I Learned More in Two Days Alongside the World Tour Peloton Than I Have in Two Years\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The off-season has come for riders up and down the peloton, with some heading home, spending time with family and resting after what was the first \u2018normal\u2019 season since the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For those under the World Tour though, it has been another relatively frustrating year, especially for British riders, not knowing when their next race is coming due to Covid restrictions or any number of usual seasonal complications.<\/p>\n<p>Red Walters, a 22-year-old sprinter rising through the ranks in the UK, has faced the same problems and, although it may have been a stop-start season for him, he has taken every opportunity that has come his way. The Hampshire-based rider made headlines this year, becoming a stagiaire with Axeon Hagens Berman, thanks to an initiative set up by 2020 Giro D\u2019Italia winner Tao Geoghegan Hart.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-controller-wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">When the road catches you slippin&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ocPsK2yQA6\">pic.twitter.com\/ocPsK2yQA6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Red Walters (@The_Redster) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/The_Redster\/status\/1379113655678210048?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 5, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async data-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>This allowed him to test himself against some of the best in the sport, competing alongside the likes of reigning world champion Julian Allaphillipe in Belgium. It may have been a big step up from smaller races that Red had been competing in \u2013 and winning \u2013 in France, but the experience has left him looking for more of the same chances in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about his time with the world-renowned Under-23 squad, a team that Tao himself earned his stripes with before joining Ineos Grenadiers, he said: \u201cThe Axeon deal came about through Tao\u2019s sponsored stagiaire programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent a massive CV, it\u2019s probably longer than all my essays at school. I had it in the back of my mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn May and June they put another statement out saying they were still looking for riders and I thought \u2018Damn, that means me out of it\u2019, but two weeks later Tao asked for my WhatsApp number and it went from there.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-controller-wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;Having the mindset and belief that you can and will win changes so much about how you ride the race&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Journal | Race wins in France, signing with Hagens Bermans Axeon, gunning for the Pan American Championships. He\u2019s got so much experience and he\u2019s been helping me with my options. It was a crazy, crazy experience. I didn\u2019t feel out of my depth from the start, but I look to my left and there is Julian Alaphilippe and Fernando Gaviria, my idols, and they are just there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say I gained more experience in those two races than the previous two years, maybe even three. It was such a different environment at those races, the skill of the riders \u2013 I noticed \u2013 was just so much higher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I got the most of myself, but I don\u2019t think it would have been fair to expect any more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of learning, I sort of had an idea of how these races go, but there are so many things that aren\u2019t even tangible that I picked up. You go over there [Europe] and the positioning is coupled with the timing and when the race gets hard I find myself at the wrong spot, even when I thought I was doing everything right. That essentially happened in both races, the guys who were fighting knew exactly when to be in the right spot.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_186962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-186962\" style=\"width: 1013px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/RedWalters.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-186962\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/RedWalters.jpg\" alt=\"Red Walters\" width=\"1013\" height=\"770\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-186962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crossing the finish line.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhen it went, Alaphilippe was sprinting and attacking and I was 150 wheels back. These lessons have all taught me a lot though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the end of the season with Axeon was cut short due to a non-Covid illness, which also made Red unable to take the start line at the Under-23 World Road Race Championships, he still made his mark on the international scene earlier in the season. With dual citizenship in the UK and Grenada, Red took on both the Caribbean Championships and the Pan-American Championships, winning the Under-23 title as well as finishing third in the Caribbean Championship in Santa Domingo in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eAIkMcpnU3E\">YouTube video<\/a> he made, he talks about being \u2018dejected\u2019 with his third place, but speaking on Zoom, the Pan-American Championships is the one that he is still thinking about now.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=eAIkMcpnU3E params=\"enablejsapi=1\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/eAIkMcpnU3E\/maxresdefault.webp');\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p>\u201cPlanning a trip during Covid times is stressful, it\u2019s all the forms and the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won the Under-23 title at the Caribbean Championships, but the Pan-American race is the big dog, you get a UCI-sanctioned jersey and that was the one I was targeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe course suited me perfectly, pan-flat, and I spent the whole race saving energy. It got to 500 metres and I was on the back of the Colombian train. Another rider hit the Colombian sprinter and I went down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still not over it, I\u2019m not going to lie. I\u2019m still salty about that. A podium was guaranteed and I was confident I was going to win. Especially with the Colombian lead-out winning the race. It&#8217;s super frustrating, but I will put it behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a lot of time and investment to get over there and I\u2019m glad I came away with something.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_186960\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-186960\" style=\"width: 1260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/Red-Walters.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-186960 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/10\/Red-Walters.jpg\" alt=\"Red Walters\" width=\"1260\" height=\"840\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-186960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Red Walters \/ Coralie Bertrand<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Red goes into the off-season speaking to future teams about next year, with one deal set to be announced, all being well, in November \u2013 a deal he remains tight-lipped about but one that will give him plenty of UCI opportunities. The deal with Axeon in 2021 is paying dividends to get his name out there.<\/p>\n<p>But one goal for next year that he is open about is his goal of representing Grenada at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and not just on the road either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commonwealth Games is literally a couple of hours from my house next year, so I am definitely keen to go. I want to do all the track and the road. Luckily the timings are not too tight, so that will be great.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to do the Pan-American Championships again. I want that jersey now, that\u2019s a big goal of mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After two protracted years of racing for Red, 2022 is already setting up to be one of the most pivotal for him as he continues his quest to the World Tour.
