Yes, in moderation coffee is good for you, especially if you exercise regularly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In fact, according to numerous studies carried out in the last decade, coffee is one of the healthiest drinks you can consume. It is loaded with polyphenols and has a high antioxidant content. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalproductsinsider.com\/heart-health\/tea-coffee-milk-top-healthy-beverages\">Natural Products Insider<\/a>, \u201ccoffee consumption can lower cardiovascular risks and lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 50 per cent. Coffee also appears to have a positive effect on neurological diseases with coffee consumption possibly reducing the risk of Parkinson\u2019s disease and Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_184555\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-184555\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/07\/Wout-van-Aert-Coffee-profimedia-0460999705.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-184555\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/07\/Wout-van-Aert-Coffee-profimedia-0460999705.jpg\" alt=\"Wout van Aert drinking coffee\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-184555\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some cyclists report that abstaining from caffeine for a week or two increases its effect when used on race day. \u00a9 Profimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now, a new video, produced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coffeeandhealth.org\/about-us\/\">Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee<\/a>, informs us that coffee is the perfect drink to consume if you go cycling. In the video, multi-discipline rider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2020\/10\/12\/the-ride2unite-with-guest-juliet-elliott\/\">Juliet Elliott<\/a>\u00a0tells us that she trains for around 12 hours a week and takes part in endurance, gravel and bike-packing races and in events such as Grinduro and Tuscany Trail. \u201cWhat I eat and drink is critical to my performance,\u201d she says, \u201cand I enjoy coffee being a part of my daily routine.\u201d\u00a0She goes on to say that she begins her day with coffee at breakfast and then has another cup before heading for the gym or jumping on her bike. \u201cI\u2019m a big fan of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2021\/05\/06\/does-coffee-help-cycling\/\">coffee,<\/a>\u201d Elliott declares. \u201cIt makes me feel energized and mentally alert, plus I\u2019m fully aware of the performance benefits. I can pedal harder, faster and for longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Science supports her statements. Dr Neil Clark, an expert in sports and exercise nutrition at Coventry University, says that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2020\/11\/05\/4-things-you-should-know-about-coffee-as-a-cyclist\/\">drinking coffee offers benefits<\/a> that can improve physical performance. \u201cThese include, but are not limited to, improved muscular endurance, movement velocity and muscular strength.\u201d In fact, research has shown that caffeine enables muscles to contract more forcefully and more regularly, he noted, and that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2018\/09\/04\/the-more-coffee-you-drink-the-longer-you-will-live\/\">coffee consumption<\/a> has been shown to improve endurance performance and sprint performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=RFj-G-zf6Rk params=\"enablejsapi=1\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/RFj-G-zf6Rk\/maxresdefault.webp');\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p>In addition, coffee can make you feel better because it releases endorphins that reduce pain and the effects of exertion while you exercise. \u201cFactors such as improved reaction time, cognition, and mood are also likely to have a positive influence on performance,\u201d Clark said. \u201cWhether cycling competitively or for recreational purposes, there is evidence that drinking a cup of coffee may enhance performance.\u201d Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2019\/08\/15\/new-research-coffee-may-help-fighting-obesity-and-diabetes\/\">drinking coffee<\/a> before going on a ride can also help protect you from accidents. \u201c[Drinking coffee] can also increase alertness, cognition and arousal, which might make people safer on the roads,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, Clark cautions that coffee should always be consumed in moderation. The European Food Standards Authority <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/sites\/default\/files\/corporate_publications\/files\/efsaexplainscaffeine150527.pdf\">recommends<\/a> drinking three to five cups a day but Clark says sensitivity to the effects of coffee differs from one individual to another. \u201cIt\u2019s always a good idea to start with the smallest amount,\u201d he advises. \u201cDrink one cup and see how that works. And it should definitely be tried in practice first before you take it for a competition.\u201d Cyclist Elliott is a convinced coffee aficionado. \u201cFor me, coffee and cycling go hand in hand,\u201d she says. \u201cIt perks me up, helps me ride longer, ride faster.
