Today on April 14, the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic voted in favour of bigger protection of cyclists on the roads. 67 out of the 102 present deputies (the number was lowered due to the Covid-19 pandemic) approved the proposal laid before the Chamber by Petr Dol\u00ednek of the Czech Social Democratic Party. Only two deputies voted against the motion. Road users will have to give 1.5 meters of space to cyclists while overtaking, 1 meter in areas with the maximum speed of 30 kph.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A somewhat heated debate preceded the acceptance of the proposal. Some of the deputies based their arguments on their own experience of sharing the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur club is divided in opinions,\u201d admitted the former Minister of Justice Helena V\u00e1lkov\u00e1 of the governmental party ANO. \u201cHowever, it works in other countries and the cyclists deserve us to be considerate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Overtaking\"<\/a>
The new law is making roads safer for cyclists. \u00a9 Profimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cIt is an easy, predictable method, tried and tested in other countries,\u201d said Ond\u0159ej Profant, a deputy for the Czech Pirate Party.<\/p>\n

The law will only come into effect after the Senate\u2019s approval and the president\u2019s signing. However, no obstructions from their side are expected. Let\u2019s hope the law will make roads safer for everyone.<\/p>\n
