It Could Learn from Athletics.\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fabio Jakobsen suffered a horrible crash in the first stage of the Tour of Poland. After contact with Dylan Groenewegen during the final sprint, he was sent into the barriers. His initial condition was described as \u201clife-threatening\u201d by doctors at the hospital in Sosnowiec. Jakobsen sustained injuries to the eye socket and jaw following a harsh impact on the head. His chest was also affected and he was put into an induced coma. Thankfully, he came out of the coma two days later. According to the doctors, he is in a relatively good condition.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Dylan Groenewegen was disqualified and suspended by his own team. The rider, in tears, apologised for his actions in a video and he is now awaiting judgement by the UCI disciplinary committee.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178907\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178907\" style=\"width: 1250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-178907 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2020\/08\/profimedia-0472717240.jpg\" alt=\"Bradley Wiggins\" width=\"1250\" height=\"809\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178907\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bradley Wiggins in an interview. \u00a9 Profimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2017\/01\/03\/gallery-sir-bradley-wiggins-career-photographs\/\">Bradley Wiggins<\/a> spoke of the incident on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurosport.com\/cycling\/bradley-wiggins-show-fabio-jakobsens-horror-crash-means-sprinting-must-change_sto7832148\/story.shtml\">Eurosport podcast<\/a>, claiming that something needs to be done to make cycling sprints safer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI instantly thought of the 100-m race in athletics and the lanes,\u201d Wiggins said on the podcast. \u201cLots of sprinters sprint with their head down or looking five metres ahead and are constantly aware of riders coming up and, sometimes, you can tend to naturally drift slightly \u2013 as Groenewegen did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome sort of markings, or something on a road, systematically in every race, for the last 50 m even, so you\u2019ve got some bearing of where you are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might not work but it\u2019s the only thing I can think of when you\u2019re flat-out sprinting. Something needs to be done rather than just disqualifying riders. Someone like Groenewegen now has to live with the consequences of that \u2013 no one in the professional peloton intentionally goes out to do that to a rider.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178908\" style=\"width: 1250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-178908 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2020\/08\/Dylan-Groenewegen-profimedia-0550359687.jpg\" alt=\"Fabio Jakobsen crash\" width=\"1250\" height=\"860\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dylan Groenewegen falls near the finish line while the bike of Fabio Jakobsen is sent flying following a collision of the two cyclists. \u00a9 Profimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The UCI released a statement condemning the Jumbo Visma rider\u2019s actions, which sort of put the blame for the incident solely on Groenewegen. However, Bradley Wiggins believes that\u2019s wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody told me during the week that there\u2019s talk of a life ban for Groenewegen. The UCI need to do one on that, if I\u2019m honest, because how do you think he feels? He might not race again because of the trauma and tragedy of what he\u2019s done, and the self-loathing he feels of doing that, because he didn\u2019t do it intentionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What do you think we should learn from the horrific crash?
