It\u2019s supposed to help with pain relief, sleep quality, and reduce inflammation. Some athletes are using it and swear by its efficacy but the preliminary research science isn\u2019t really there yet. Let\u2019s take a closer look if CBD is the thing you should be adding to your recovery routine.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Not enough science yet<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The first thing to note when talking about the effects of CBD on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2021\/06\/22\/breaking-through-a-training-plateau-recovery\/\">recovery<\/a> is that there\u2019s not much actual peer-reviewed science to lean on. Mark Tallon, Ph.D., the managing director of a UK firm Legal Foods and a nutritionist, called out the CBD sector for a gaping lack of scientific data.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_176696\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176696\" style=\"width: 1250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-176696 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2020\/01\/Cannabidiol-CBD-profimedia-0472303553.jpg\" alt=\"Two small bottles of CBD oil on a table with greenery in the background\" width=\"1250\" height=\"941\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9\u00a0Anan Kaewkhammul \/ Alamy \/ Alamy \/ Profimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere are no studies that relate to the dose used in commercial low-dose CBD products except an early assessment study that found 75mg CBD oil per day could improve sleep, reduce appetite and enhance the quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even though this is true, we do have some science that suggests potential mechanisms and we also have a lot of athletes claiming they are getting <a href=\"https:\/\/recoveryhubusa.com\/the-science-behind-cbd\/\">tangible benefits from using CBD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Reduced inflammation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2020\/02\/20\/is-cryotherapy-a-good-recovery-tool-for-cyclists\/\">inflammation<\/a>. We know that some of it is necessary to stimulate training adaptations but too much can slow down recovery and limit performance. A study by Nagarkatti (2009) described a potential mechanism through which cannabinoids could help. It shows that cannabinoids binding to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5075023\/\">CB2 receptors may have an anti-inflammatory effect<\/a> by reducing cytokine production. In other words, CBD bound to CB2 receptors might help reduce the response when your immune system sounds the alarm after hard workouts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-173059 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Women-Bike-Sleep.jpg\" alt=\"A cyclist on his side, but on his bike, on a mattress, pretending to be sleep and possibly dreaming of riding. \" width=\"1378\" height=\"918\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Improved sleep quality<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2018\/11\/08\/improve-your-sleep-get-rid-of-blue-light\/\">Sleep<\/a> is a pillar of recovery, anything that can help improve sleep quality will boost recovery in a big way. A study by Murillo-Rodriguez (2003) shows that CBD might help with sleep by inhibiting the reuptake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/adenosine-and-sleep-3015337\">adenosine<\/a>. Adenosine is a molecule that builds up throughout the day and makes you sleepy in the evening if you have enough of it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Pain relief<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the most\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">appealing aspects of CBD is the fact it is supposed to be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2019\/12\/11\/aches-pains-and-gifts-to-fix-them\/\">relieve pain<\/a>. Overall, studies have shown that cannabis is effective for reducing pain, including musculoskeletal pain from exercise as well as stiff joints. The problem is that it\u2019s mostly THC and far less CBD that has these properties. Very little is known about the impact of<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/span>CBD alone on pain management.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Athlete experiences<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The lack of science is not stopping a lot of athletes experimenting with CBD and experiencing benefits. For example, Andrew Talansky, a professional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2020\/04\/01\/so-you-need-a-triathlon-bike\/\">triathlete<\/a> from California, who, as an elite cyclist, rode in the Tour de France, said that his sleep improved almost immediately when he started taking CBD daily. He also said he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/how-to-use-cbd-for-anxiety\">felt less anxious<\/a> about transitioning from pro cycling to his new sport, felt that he recovered more quickly from hard training, and had fewer flare-ups of his old cycling injuries.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B3XtmDVhzPu\/<\/p>\n<p>Elite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2018\/07\/04\/the-mighty-arch-2-arc-whats-it-like-to-race-one-of-the-hardest-ultra-endurance-triathlons\/\">ultramarathoner<\/a> Avery Collins says that CBD products are a big part of his daily routine and credits them with boosting his energy levels, speeding his recovery from long trail runs, and improving his sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Bush-Joseph, M.D., a professor of orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, says: \u201cCBD coupled with stretching, icing, and foam rolling is a common treatment plan for tendonitis injuries about the knee, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bupa.co.uk\/health-information\/knee-clinic\/knee-conditions\/ilio-tibial-band-itb-friction-syndrome\">iliotibial band syndrome<\/a>. Many patients like the fact that CBD is a natural substance. While specific research on the use of CBD in this instance is lacking, many believe that it helps prevent muscle and collagen breakdown.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Does it work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As you can see, some athletes do see benefits when using CBD. The science is still not fully there to say whether that\u2019s placebo or a real effect. But, so far, it seems the risk of trying CBD is not very high. That means probably the best option, if you can afford it, is to try and see for yourself whether CBD will help. If you are conservative, you can wait, there\u2019s a lot of research on the way and we will know more in the coming years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CBD is a new and exciting supplement that boasts a variety of benefits for athletic recovery.
