So why were Egan Bernal, Rigoberto Ur\u00e1n, Sergio Henao, and Nairo Quintana riding out front? And what else can we learn from Le Tour 2019?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Colombia and France are bigger than any team<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sure, you can have a favourite team but it\u2019s usually the cyclist that attracts you to that team.\u00a0 Quintana spoke with great pride of Colombia\u2019s first Tour de France victory and who can blame him?\u00a0 Even though stage 19 was sadly shortened, it was still long enough for Bernal\u2019s strike to earn him a decisive victory. After this, the peloton was never far from fans waving Colombian flags.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=LmbAqQTx2hk params=\"enablejsapi=1\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/LmbAqQTx2hk\/maxresdefault.webp');\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p>Quintana also raised the flag with his devastating victory over the Col du Galibier to win stage 18, finishing just 5:30 behind Bernal\u2019s winning time, overall. French riders also overshadowed their teams early on before the heart-breaking sight of Pinot being told to abandon.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=jtbCP7Eh3kQ params=\"enablejsapi=1\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/jtbCP7Eh3kQ\/maxresdefault.webp');\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<h2><strong>Ineos loves Brailsford loves Ineos<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fostering a good relationship with David Brailsford offers riders a serious opportunity to win Le Tour.\u00a0 Brailsford seems happy to let the strongest rider go for the win in any given year &#8211; but I doubt that the spirit of respect and comradery has been easy to cultivate.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=dA4uIG5dWp8 params=\"enablejsapi=1\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/dA4uIG5dWp8\/maxresdefault.webp');\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p>Geraint Thomas would have looked silly pulling rank given Bernal\u2019s form in the classics but by stage 15, both Alaphilippe and Thomas were showing strain under pressure \u2013 suggesting that Thomas was there to check early aggressive riding, allowing Bernal to pace himself more.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=3RA35rmnYMY params=\"enablejsapi=1\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/3RA35rmnYMY\/maxresdefault.webp');\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, Ineos have continued offering Brailsford\u2019s team the freedom to change the way tour cycling is approached. Brailsford\u2019s winning streak will continue until the rest of the peloton adapts to his patient, tactical style, and ability to bring out the best in the talent he retains.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The peloton was faster<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bernal averaged 25.2mph over the entire race, which was 0.22mph faster than Thomas\u2019s winning time in 2018. This owed a lot to the aggressive riding of the French cyclists early in Le Tour \u2013 Alaphilippe\u2019s Combative jersey was well-earned.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=mWju5CbWELk params=\"enablejsapi=1\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/mWju5CbWELk\/maxresdefault.webp');\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p>Every Tour, there\u2019s always far more footage than it\u2019s possible to release but I hope we get to see some footage of Nils Politt\u2019s hair-raising descent on Stage 18. The Katusha-Alpecin\u2019s rider was the first rider to officially break 100kph, hitting 101.5kph on a -7% gradient section of the road.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sagan is now a Senior Citizen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Cyclistes Professionnels Associ\u00e9s are recognised by the UCI as a non-profit association that represents the interests of its riders. Sagan\u2019s thinly veiled criticism of the CPA\u2019s apparent inaction led to uncharacteristic relaxation of the racing rules.
