The Biennale launched in Amsterdam earlier this month before going on a world tour. 15 projects out of 9 countries have been selected this year. The thing that unites them, according to the judges, is the ability to demonstrate how design solutions can go beyond the functional and also lead to healthier lifestyles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCycling is much more than a transportation solution for cities, it is also a powerful force for transformation. Every city or neighbourhood has the potential to become a success story through cycling. With this Biennale, we want to offer the inspiration to make that happen, so we hope many cities will take up the offer to host the BAB on its international tour,\u201d Maud de Vries, the main organizer, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Check out this year\u2019s picks in the gallery below.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Batlle i Roig (Barcelona, Spain)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174287\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174287\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174287 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This junction has been a barrier for people walking and cycling for 60 years, but now the new path offers the most direct crossing possible, cutting almost 500 metres off the route. The green pathway is a very pleasant and surprising space, suggestive of country lanes beyond the city limits and major road infrastructures. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>BureauVanEig\/Biq architecten (Delft, the Netherlands)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174288\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174288\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174288 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This bicycle parking is centrally situated at the campus of the TU Delft educational institution and is combined with a bicycle workshop and coffee place. The main challenge in the design was to transform the large bicycle storage into an attractive hangout spot. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Coniglio Ainsworth Architects (Perth, Australia)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174289\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174289\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174289 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Curtin Bike Hub is a key component of Curtin University\u2019s Creative Quarter. The Bike Hub encourages cycling as a convenient and sustainable mode of transport to and from campus. It does this through its key features, which include washing, changing and locker room facilities and a two-tier bicycle stacking system for approximately 200 bicycles. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Dissing+Weitling (Xiamen, China)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174291\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174291\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174291 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The City of Xiamen has set out to develop a better bicycle environment and produced a long-term bicycle strategy to get there. Together with the city, Dissing+Weitling developed the concept of establishing an 8-kilometre long bicycle skyway on raised platforms running along and underneath the city\u2019s existing overhead Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) skyway in the central part of the city. The result is China\u2019s first suspended bicycle path and the world\u2019s longest aerial bicycle lane. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Visit Limburg, Lens\u00b0Ass Architecten (Limburg, Belgium)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174292\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174292\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174292 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The project of Visit Limburg leads cyclists through a path more than 200 metres long and 3 metres wide, with water at eye level on both sides. Since its opening, the interest in this special bike trail has been huge. On average, 700 visitors per day explore this part of the Limburg cycle route network. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Ector Hoogstad Architecten (Utrecht, the Netherlands)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174293\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174293\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174293 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174293\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Utrecht Central Station, the Netherlands\u2019 busiest public transportation hub, is undergoing radical changes to become a true intermodal transfer terminal, fully mobilising the potential synergy between bicycle use and public transport. Users can cycle all the way to (electronically indicated) available slots. Additional facilities such as a cycle repair shop and a bike rental service help meet every need of the users. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>BuroLandschap (Limburg, Belgium)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174295\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174295\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174295 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_07.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This iconic construction is nearly 700 metres long. You can cycle or walk through a different scene every season. You discover the sounds and scents of the Pijnven forest whilst biking to a height of up to 10 metres. This exceptional landmark, with a diameter of 100 metres, offers a sensational yet safe cycling experience for the young and old. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Monk Mackenzie, LandLAB, GHD (Auckland, New Zealand)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174296\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174296 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This project saw a redundant piece of highway infrastructure reused and reinvented as a cycleway, to complete Auckland\u2019s inner city cycle loop. The 600-metre off-ramp is painted a bright resolute pink to signal an urban realm for pedestrians and cyclists that is differentiated from the surrounding active highway network. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Schneider+Schumacher (Raunheim, Germany)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174297\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174297\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_09.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174297 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174297\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new white \u00d6lhafen Bridge is an elegant, curved structure. It spans the 70-metre-wide entrance to the oil terminal harbour in Raunheim with a spiralling access ramp. The objective was to emphasize the bridge\u2019s leisure use and, above all, to provide unobstructed river views, despite all the safety issues. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Nooyoon (New York, USA)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174298\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174298\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174298 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Queensway is one of New York\u2019s abandoned railways and can be found \u2013 as the name suggests \u2013 in Queens. The project \u201cUpside Down Bridge\u201d proposes an overturned bridge to be used to connect spaces on the ground level and above. Although a linear structure, the bridge will be a catalyst for tying disconnected urban areas together. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>COBE and Gottlieb Paludan Architects, Sweco (Copenhagen, Denmark)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174299\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174299\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174299 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174299\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">N\u00f8rreport Station is the busiest station in Denmark. It is composed of a series of rounded, floating roofs, mounted on striking glass pavilions. Ample bike parking space is the main feature, accommodating 2,500 slots. In order to create a clear hierarchy between the area for bicycles and the area for city life, all bicycle parking spaces have been placed 40 centimetres below the city floor. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>SPADE (Cologne, Germany)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174300\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174300\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174300 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The RheinRing is located between two major bridges, the Hohenzollernbr\u00fccke and the Deutzer Br\u00fccke, at the Rhine Car\u00e9e \u2013 one of the most significant public urban spaces of Cologne. It represents the new downtown as well as the link between the two halves of the inner city. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Paper planes e.V. (Berlin, Germany)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174301\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174301\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174301 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Radbahn converts the currently mainly neglected space along and under the iconic elevated underground line U1 in the heart of Berlin into a 9-km shelter for a separated and mostly covered bike path. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>NL Architects (The Hague, The Netherlands)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174302\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174302\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174302 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Hague Central Station is currently undergoing a major change as it is turned into a modern hub. This transformation sparked the idea from NL Architects that the station\u2019s bike parking could be inserted into the hall as well. Elevated plates that organize the bike parking in strips make an efficient but also striking layout. The elevation of bike parking enables a lot of daylight to get in and creates a spectacular welcoming experience. \u00a9 BYCS.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>NEXT Architects (Purmerend, The Netherlands)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174303\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174303\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174303 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/06\/BAB_15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Melkwegbridge works as a connector between the old and the new centre. Its unique form derives from the functional approach to separating the routing for pedestrians and bikes crossing the water. Pedestrians are given the opportunity to maintain the direct line of the historic Melkweg (Milkroad) within the bridge, arching over the water at 12 metres high and creating an incredible view over the city.
