The largest study to date of cardiorespiratory fitness in healthy people suggests it doesn\u2019t matter much; the conclusion is simple \u2013 move more to live longer.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Cycling to work will help you live longer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The research presented at Europrevent in April 2019 confirms what we all wanted to hear, improving fitness doesn\u2019t require doing activities you don\u2019t like. Simply moving more is linked to living longer, regardless of age, sex, and starting fitness level.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_173191\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-173191\" style=\"width: 1250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/04\/profimedia-0387299759.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-173191\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/04\/profimedia-0387299759.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1250\" height=\"833\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-173191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Simple morning commute will do wonders.\u00a0\u00a9 Profimedia, Alamy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPeople think they have to start going to the gym and exercising hard to get fitter,\u201d said study author Dr Elin Ekblom-Bak of the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences in Stockholm. \u201cBut it doesn\u2019t have to be that complicated. For most people, just being more active in daily life \u2013 taking the stairs, exiting the metro a station early, cycling to work \u2013 is enough to benefit health since levels are so low to start with. The more you do, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Your VO2 max matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The study included over 316,000 Swedish adults aged 18\u201374. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured using a submaximal cycling test and expressed as maximal oxygen uptake during exercise (VO2 max). The risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events fell by between 2.8% and 3.2%, with each millilitre increase in VO2 max.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is more motivational than just telling people they need to do better. People in the lower range of VO2 max will reduce their risk even more (9%) while those at the upper end of VO2 max will reduce their risk by 1%,\u201d Dr Ekblom-Bak said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162371\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162371\" style=\"width: 1300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/11\/WLC_CatchingBreath_2017_Race_13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-162371 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/11\/WLC_CatchingBreath_2017_Race_13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1300\" height=\"867\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162371\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events fell by between 2.8% and 3.2%, with each millilitre increase in VO2 max.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Increasing fitness should be public health priority<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Dr Ekblom-Bak says that increasing fitness should become a priority for public health guidelines, and clinicians should assess fitness during health screenings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur previous research has shown that fitness levels in the general population have dropped by 10% in the last 25 years. In 2016\u20132017, almost every second man and woman had a low fitness level, so this is a huge problem. Fitness is needed for daily activities.
