The elegant lines of a bike frame, the languid motion of a pedalling cyclist. There are countless pages of cycle chic that celebrate the stylish everyday choices cyclists make. But, for today, we\u2019re going to celebrate the bad ones.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Splash tape<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Please, stop trying to make splash tape happen \u2013 we\u2019re looking at you, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chainreactioncycles.com\/cinelli-macro-splash-cork-bar-tape\/rp-prod120885?gs=1&amp;sku=sku433894&amp;pgrid=60711843258&amp;ptaid=pla-433871464292&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_campaign=PLA+All+Products&amp;utm_medium=base&amp;utm_content=mkwid|sPWxUt2xi_dc|pcrid|309840119912|pkw||pmt||prd|433894UK&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiAk-7jBRD9ARIsAEy8mh6VgFBIJ2m9mC_gy0o7yx-b3X3h4bQ0uV45YmmYwQcWO6Gwe3GIZnUaAkOfEALw_wcB\">Cinelli<\/a>. When God created bicycles, he left it several decades before adding splash tape to the mix. It was clearly an afterthought. The 80s were a hedonistic time as can be demonstrated by this abomination:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Splash_Tape.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-172608\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Splash_Tape.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"655\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All they needed to do was choose black bar tape and this monstrosity would have become an urbane style classic. But instead of admiring the lugged steel frame, your eyes gravitate towards the swirling style vortex that is splash tape.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Splash_Tape-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-172609\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Splash_Tape-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"660\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ignoring expiry dates<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Read the garment care label of your cycle kit. Getting it wrong can wreck your beloved merino jersey \u2013 or worse. You could fall foul of local indecency laws. Artificial fibres like lycra and polyester can be weakened by something as innocuous as using fabric conditioner.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172610\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172610\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Lycra_Fail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-172610 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Lycra_Fail.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Top tip: Before you go for a ride, ask your other half to take a look at you bent over. No one wants to see your exhaust port on the Sunday club ride \u2013 artificial fibres have an expiry date. Make sure you observe them.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Reinventing the frame<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>From aero-discs to different rim materials, reinventing the wheel has a long and honourable history in cycling. But reinventing the frame is an altogether different proposition. I give you \u2013 The Monocoque.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Carbon_Frame-1.JPG.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-172611\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Carbon_Frame-1.JPG.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"635\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of you may think that the image looks pretty cool. I reckon if you left the wheels where they were and removed that frame, you\u2019d have to admit the image looked a lot cooler. That doesn\u2019t stop people having a go at doing away with the diamond frame. Maybe one day they\u2019ll succeed.\u00a0 Or maybe not.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Frame-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-172612\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Frame-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Getting helmets wrong<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are a lot of reasons to wear helmets and there are reasonable arguments that it should be an individual\u2019s choice. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2018\/11\/26\/the-ultimate-question-with-or-without-a-helmet\/\">The debate<\/a> can become very passionate because one side is arguing for safety, and the other is arguing for freedom \u2013 neither of which is a bad thing. But both sides agree on one thing:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Cyclist-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-172613\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2019\/03\/Cyclist-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"349\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I kind of see the logic in the above cyclist\u2019s decision to wear his helmet backwards. There are more air vents at the back than the front, so if you want to stay cool, this decision makes sense. But you may as well not be wearing a helmet because this method offers zero protection should you go over your handlebars.
