Now that you\u2019ve decided to buy a winter bike<\/a> you\u2019ve got to think about storing your summer bikes for the next few months.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how to do it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wash your bike<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Before the weather gets too cold, give your bike a wash.\u00a0 Take the opportunity now while there\u2019s still movement in the summer-grade lube, and before your drive chain takes any abuse from the winter muck and grime \u2013 especially you guys with roadies.<\/p>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n

Remove the chain from your bike and set it aside for its own special treatment.\u00a0 With the chain out the way, you can really make sure you go to town cleaning the bike.\u00a0 It\u2019s nice to give your bike a ritualistic farewell but come spring time, you\u2019ll be glad you made the effort.<\/p>\n

Pickle the chain<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Now you can attend to your chain.\u00a0 Getting rid of the muck, minerals and grime that\u2019s built up is essential \u2013 not only for your chain, but also for the other parts it rubs against.\u00a0 Your cassette will thank you.\u00a0 Check out this video for our favourite method of degreasing your bike chain.<\/p>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n

Even out of storage, I recommend the 3-chain rotation system \u2013 keep one chain on your bike, one chain degreasing, and another chain drying in your workshop.\u00a0 Each chain will last 3 times longer and save wear on your cassette.<\/p>\n

Tyre and tube care<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ideally you want to hang your bike by its frame while you\u2019re not using it for extended periods.\u00a0 But if this isn\u2019t an option, pump your tyres to full pressure, and give them a quick squeeze once a week to check if they\u2019ve significantly deflated.<\/p>\n

If they\u2019re deflated enough that the rim is close to pinching the tyre and innertube against the floor, pump them up to full pressure.\u00a0 Although it\u2019s unlikely to cause snakebites, even a light carbon bike resting directly on deflated tubes can cause the tubes to weaken on that spot.\u00a0 Why risk it?<\/p>\n

Cover up<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Now that you\u2019ve spent all that time preparing your bike for storage, you\u2019ll want to cover it up to keep the dust from settling.\u00a0 Full bike covers are great \u2013 but make sure you get one that gives you easy access to the tyres in case you need to pump them.<\/p>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n

Consider the environment you\u2019re storing your bike in.\u00a0 If you\u2019re doing lots of woodwork and there\u2019s lots of dust, one of the above bike-specific bags will work for you.\u00a0 If you\u2019re storing your bike in a vehicle-only space such as a domestic garage, a simple dust sheet<\/a> will probably work just fine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
